Firstly, the bottle is BEAUTIFUL. With this serum, a little goes a very long way. It's price is high but it's totally worth it. Two to three drops like the box says is enough to cover my entire face with. I initially wasn't a fan of the scent but I got used to it and the results far outweighed the strong scent. After only the first two days, I noticed a difference in how fresh and soft my skin felt when I woke up. I felt like it rejuvenated my skin and helped it truly rest during the night. Great product.

This serum works all night to replenish the skin with moisture and ensure younger-looking skin by morning. It’s got a lovely scent and the slightly oily texture.

I started using a drop or two only at night as it is intended but loved it so much that I started to sneak a small drop into my day routine too but I would only recommend this for people with super dry skin as it might make oilier skin too oily!

This iconic serum is a blend of essential oils and distilled botanicals and contains moisturizers like Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (derived from coconut and glycerin) and squalane, as well as rosehip seed oil, an amazing antioxidant and is designed to replenish your skin overnight. My dehydrated skin lapped this up!

About the Serum - Main Ingredients

Evening Primrose Oil: Evening Primrose Oil is an effective on skin barrier repair and boosting radiance.

Squalane: A signature Kiehl’s ingredient, Squalane is a botanical lipid that is similar in molecular structure to natural skin lipids. It has an exceptional affinity to skin, and because it’s easily absorbed, Squalane helps restore skin’s natural moisture balance to keep it extra soft and supple. And all other ingredients, you can see in on the packaging.

The Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate is a night serum designed to help repair your skin as you sleep and deliver hydration and balance your skin with its key ingredients of squalene and evening primrose oil. Let me tell you though what my favourite part of this serum is – lavender oil.

The Midnight Recovery Concentrate is infused with the wonderfully relaxing scent of lavender. I would give it 5 stars just from its mood altering effects as you inhale it. A definite ‘spa quality' product.

But first the packaging. I love the deep blue glass bottle this elixir comes in. I love the fact that it comes with a dropper although I’m not sure if my bottle is faulty, but I find it hard to depress the squeeze top enough to pick up the serum. I dread to think what will happen once the liquid level drops and I can’t get the serum out – what then?

Fortunately, you only need about 2 drops. But another thing I noticed is that the vacuum isn’t strong enough, so the dropper does not hold the serum properly so it will drip.
Now, are the directions to be believed? Do you really only need 2 drops of this powerful elixir to wake up to glowing skin?

Yes. Do not be like me and be sceptical and try to use more.

The serum has a very liquidy texture so 2 drops is hardly anything. I started out using 3-4 drops but found that it was just too oily on my skin and my pillow was starting to look greasy after just one or 2 nights. So after about 4 days, I cut back down to 2 drops.

Here’s how I continued to use it:

Drop 2 drops of Midnight Recovery Concentrate into your palm, rub hands together. Hold palms in front of nose and take 3 deep breaths of the lavender scent. Apply palms to skin, starting with the cheeks then forehead, nose and chin, pressing slightly on the skin.

You might wonder where the 2 drops of oil have gone on your hands, but it is enough for your skin. Apply over your skin and lightly press your palms against your face. It absorbs and dries quite quickly.

What I noticed almost immediately is how velvety my skin felt. There are no silicones nor parabens in the Midnight Recovery Concentrate so it’s not attributable to silicone. It does not feel nor look oily if used correctly and my skin looks and feels plumped up and glowy.

Initially, I used the elixir with a night cream but found it a little heavy, so I used it on its own. It felt sufficient even in an air-conditioned room. Kiehl’s says your skin looks visibly better in the morning. I tested this theory in the 3 weeks that I used only the Midnight Recovery Concentrate without night cream. Yes it does look good in the morning. It looks rested and better and I feel more rested too! I attribute it to the lavender oil that helps me relax so I sleep better and so with my body relaxed and my skin getting its night time nourishment from the elixir, right there we have a winning formula.

The ingredients (listed on the packaging) are said to be 99.8% natural and its paraben free and mineral oil free. Again definitely a winning formula trait for an anything-natural junkie like me.

Pros: Skin feels velvety smooth and plump. Smells wonderful and relaxing. No breakouts, no irritations. Skin really does look better in the morning.

Cons: Cap thing does not draw up a lot of serum. Serum is liable to drip from dropper. Some people might consider this expensive

A 30ml bottle retails at R695. Its not expensive because 2 drops a day means one bottle will last you close to a year, used nightly only. Its been 2 months and the liquid level has barely dropped. Absolutely worth it!

Do give it a shot, I always advise trying out a sample first so get to your nearest Edgars stores (try the bigger stores) and let me know if you like it as much as I do. :)

This was definitely my favourite of the three serums that I got to test. The packaging is beautiful, the dark blue bottle reminds me of fancy products that our moms used to use. The clear liquid has a lovely faint scent, almost lavender but not - it's just a herbaceous smell. Smells clean.

The serum glides on like silk. I think that's why I love it most. The formula is a little thinner than the Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution, but that's not the end of the world. It just makes my skin feel soooo soft.

It's hard to say exactly what effect this serum in particular had on my skin, as the other two had such a huge impact. I guess it's my favourite just because it makes me feel good every time I apply it. Since it's the last of the three that gets applied at night, I go to bed with that silky feeling and the lovely aroma.

First of all, I absolutely love the packaging for this item, it just so darn pretty, and the colors are divine. It just gives you the idea of all things luxurious when you look at it, it is an oil after all.
I was a bit skeptical at first, as I have never used an essential oil on my face, but was very excited to give it a try. I have combination skin, so don't really have any issues regarding oily skin, so that was not a problem for me.
The dropper is perfect as you do not want to use too much of it, which would inevitably leave you with a greasy face, so kudos for that.
I noticed that after a week or so that in the mornings my skin did not look as tired looking as before, looked like I had had a full 8 hours sleep, when indeed I had had only 5-6 hours.
I love that, I don't have to worry about too many concealers, i looked fresh and re-energized.
I was confused on my than one occasion for being younger than I actually am, and I call that a home run.
The smell can be a bit overpowering at first but after a while you get used to it and I now love it.
Very great buy...

I'm torn about this serum, because there are things I love about it, but it seemed to make my breakouts worse. It contains some essential oils and ingredients which could bother sensitive or acne-prone skin, but it seems to work amazingly for the majority of people.

I really love the pretty packaging and the apothecary-style dropper. It's a convenient way to dispense the oil. I think this suits most skin types and I had no problem with the oil itself - it is light enough for combination skin. I absolutely love the scent of this, it is perfect for bed time and just helps you relax and fall asleep.

On the plus side, I found that it was a very nourishing moisturiser for my skin and I never woke up with dry patches or my skin feeling too tight (or too oily for that matter). My skin felt very soft when I used this. On the negative side, my breakouts didn't clear up while I was using this, and even though it wasn't the cause of my breakouts, it didn't help my skin to stop breaking out. I stopped using it after a few weeks to wait for my skin to stop breaking out before trying again. I usually prefer oil-free products.

In retrospect I could have used this serum once or twice a week instead of every night. I think it would be best suited for normal to dry skins or basically any skin which isn't overly sensitive or prone to breakouts. I will definitely use this in the future when my skin has cleared up, because I really enjoy using it.

This is an amazing lightweight oil that is brilliant for night time use. It had a prominent scent of lavender which was just the icing on the cake after a long day. The formula was absorbed well into the skin and left me feel soothed a day calmed. I also believe the lavender contributed to a good night's rest. This product feeds the skin overnight and locks in moisture so in the morning your skin feels soft and we'll moisturised still. It comes in a dark blue bottle which protects the products from light and has a convenient dropper which means you don't waster any product. A little really goes a long way!

I received a sample of this glossy box was still in south Africa - that was about 2 or 3 years ago and I can honestly say a little goes a long way as I still have some of this left , its almost finished and that makes me sad as its a little pricey but it works like a bomb! some days especially in winter I will wash my make up off and then realize I have a really dry patch of skin some where on my face, I put a little of this on before bed and BOOM the next day when you wake up the dry patch is gone! its almost like magic :)
