What really is a serum?

Many women have heard of a serum, or have been persuaded into purchasing one at some stage of their life- without any idea about what it really does, or how to apply it. Well ladies, here is the serum low-down…

A skincare serum is a gel-like product that has a high concentration of active ingredients. They are usually oil-free and have deep moisturizing properties (though should usually be used with a moisturizer as well). Serums can be used to target anti-ageing, anti-oxidation, hydration and plumping, brightening, evening skin tone and to help with acne. You should use a serum if you feel your skin is particularly dry, or it just needs a little boost- but it’s not necessary to use it all the time!

So, basically serums are beneficial because they are absorbed quickly and effectively, and contain many active ingredients to feed your skin. A serum will give your skin a lift and ensure your skin’s moisture is effectively locked in.

***Serum tips***
Moist skin is a lot more permeable than dry skin, so applying your serum to slightly damp skin may be more effective. Also, skin that has been recently exfoliated will absorb more of the serum’s active ingredients faster.
