The Hair Commandments – Hair Care

Your crowning glory looking less than gorgeous? Follow these hair care commandments for tresses that turn heads…

#1: You shall manage your mane
If your hair is damaged, dry or colour-treated (or all three!), use products formulated to repair and re-hydrate tired locks by adding much-needed strength. For management of oily hair, use a deep-cleansing shampoo and a light conditioner to keep it looking its absolute best.  Work with what you’ve got gals!

#2: You shall not steal the moisture from your hair
Are you guilty of washing your hair every single day? As hard as it is to not wash your hair everyday (especially if you are a gym bunny) daily hair washing rips the natural oils from the hair cuticles and can leave your tresses weak, limp and difficult to work with- so not a good look!

Hairdressers recommend washing hair every two to three days and for extra protection, finish with a cool-to-cold rinse to help seal the hair cuticle and impart natural shine. P.S. If your locks are looking like an oil slick during the in-between days sprinkle a bit of Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Powder to minimize the grease!

#3: You shall worship nourishing products
A mild shampoo is best for hair, especially in the summer months when hair is exposed to harsh conditions such as sun, salt and chlorine. During the winter a more heavy duty shampoo is needed. It is vital to following washing with a rich nourishing conditioner. Don’t use those two-in-one shampoo and conditioners, they don’t do the trick!

#4: You shall invest in at-home treatments
Splash out and invest in an intensive repair treatment to use at home. Repairing hair masks penetrate deep into the hair cuticle, offering a surge of moisture, replenishing the condition of your hair. Use a hair mask at home twice weekly for the best results and your hair will shine like a glam girl of Hollywood!

#5: You shall use heating tools with caution
Are you are slave to your hair straightener and hair dryer? Don’t feel ashamed, we all are. Minimize the damage and try let your hair dry naturally. If you going to use hairdryers and hairstraighters use products created specifically to prevent heat damage. Thermal protecting products are a must as they create a fine layer around the cuticle of your hair, preventing the heat generated by the appliance from penetrating your cuticle, which will leave it dry, dull and damaged.

#6: You shall protect your hair from the sun
This hair commandment applies even in Winter ladies. During winter there are still harsh rays from the sun which contribute to the degradation of the hair follicles. Treat your hair like you would your skin. Always use moisturising hair sprays and protectors with SPF which shield the hair from UV.

#7: You shall have patience with knots
We all encounter those big knots, which we just want to pull BUT they need to be tended to with care to hinder breakage. To deal with knots brush your hair before washing it and then when wet, use a wide tooth comb to ease the knots. For fine, dry or fragile hair it is best to brush with a conditioner in to avoid breakage.

#8: You shall let hair hang loose Wearing your tresses in a tight bun, ponytail or braid can cause breakage and baldness, so let it hang loose on occasions and never sleep with your hair tied up.

#9: You shall be religious about salon visits
Regular trims and salon treatments will keep hair in optimum condition and help hair to grow. What could be better!? It’s recommended that you visit your salon every six to eight weeks- so go, get trimmy with it!

#10: You shall not follow every trend
If you have followed every hair trend from the “Rachel” to the “Pob” this hair commandment is for you! Find and maintain a hairstyle that suits you, your colouring and facial structure. Update your look to suit you and not just to emulate the hot hair trends.
