The Beauty Bin

Love that makeup mascara but have feeling its way past it’s sell by date? Find out the dish on when to toss your products and when to keep them…

Lotions and potions…
Love your body butter? Hanging onto an expensive cream even though it’s been in your beauty bag for a decade? Here’s when to ditch it…

Anti- aging and acne treatments and skin creams
Three months to a year. Antioxidants are easily oxidized, so be on the lookout for any changes in colour- it’s a sure sign it’s time to chuck out.

Sunscreen: protecting your skin is important but there is no point in slathering on the sunscreen if it’s off! Most suntan lotions last up to a year but change your sunblock every summer season for the best
effect!  Check the package for an expiration date.

Body lotion:
Keeping that big tub of body butter? It may not be the best idea because a tub can harbour germs due to exposure when opened. Creams that are in a tube or pump container can last up to 3 years.

Hair Care… Love your luscious locks? Make sure they keep shiny and
gorgeous with products that work…

Shampoo: here’s some good news! You can keep your shampoo AND conditioner for up to 3 years! Score.  Hair experts say however it’s good to change your shampoo and conditioner brand every couple of months as hair becomes used to it.

Hairstyling products… some more good news. You can keep your hair styling products ( mousses, gels, straightening balms etc) for up to three to five years. Most are alcohol-based, which helps preserve the formula. Yay!

Makeup… is your makeup bag full of expired beauty products? Find out here…

Mascara and liquid eyeliner…keep your peepers healthy and germ free by replacing your mascara and liquid eyeliners every three to four months. Make sure you’re diligent about replacing these items to prevent contamination and infections!

Eye and lip pencil… you can hang onto your eye and lip pencils for a good couple of years- three to five years to be precise. Here’s a tip, sharpen them before each use as a way to preserve them and keep them clean.

Lipstick and lip gloss… you can keep your lips looking fab for two or three years with your favourite shade because lipstick and glosses are keepers.

Base… you can keep your base for up to two years!  Most bottles are designed to last that long and keep fresh. Base it!

Bits and bobs…

Perfume… wondering how long to hang onto your favourite scent- about two years! To get more mileage out of a perfume, resist the temptation to display a pretty bottle on your vanity.? Instead, stash it away in a cool, dark place.

Nail polish… your favourite shade of nail polish is good to go for one year, any longer and it goes hard and clumpy, not the best look for nails!
