Resting Ethnic Hairstyles – Wigs VS Weaves VS Braids

The low down on resting ethnic hairstyles.

Love or loathe them, these fierce and fabulously famous Queen B’s are successful and independently wealthy in their own right. More importantly Beyonce, Bonang and Brandy know good hair or at least know people that know good hair and they are certainly not afraid to spend on them.

Store bought or God given, any self-respecting woman understands and appreciates the power of good hair. Wigs, weaves and/or braids will give a woman an instant dazzling makeover that will leave men drooling and jealous sisters starring daggers. All one needs in no time at all is a friendly credit card or a willing cheque card.

Wigs:
This type of hair has come a long way from the powdered wigs of the English and French courts. In our modern times, wigs are not only for film and theatre folks, but have been embraced by modern women especially those with ethnic hair or those with medical condition that affect hair growth.

Pros & Cons:
•    Instant head of glorious hair
•    They need no hair to be attached worn
•    Countless styles to choose from
•    Effortless hair styling
•    Natural hair gets to rest
•    Allows hair to recuperate from heat and/ or chemicals
•    The ethnic or natural hair underneath can easily be washed and nurtured
•    With a bit of know-how, washing and styling can be done at home
•    May age badly thus they have a best before date
•    Not swimming, sleeping or strenuous movement  friendly

Weaves:
The beauty of weave is that they bridge the world of wigs and that of one’s hair chasm and can be more versatile and less activity limiting.

Pros & Cons:
•    Seamless blending of one’s real hair and store bought one
•    Offer versatility and flexible styling
•    Tend to  be more realistic looking
•    Are more securely attached
•    Can handle water without hitting the crises mode
•    They need real hair to be attached to
•    Puts more strain on the real hair and the hair line
•    Not easy to clean the real hair underneath
•    Needs more funds and specialist maintenance

Braids:
I consider braids to be the original hairstyle that is great for letting hair to rest and they can be done at home with limited funds with no hassles.

Pros & Cons:
•    Pocket friendly
•    Can be done at home
•    Endless styling options
•    Put stress to hair roots
•    May be time consuming to remove

Quality wigs and weaves are fabulous because they make use of real hair but most braids are either made of one’s hair or of one’s hair supplemented with synthetic hair. All these hairstyle options eliminate and/or minimise the use of chemical and heat to the fragile ethnic hair allowing it to rest, grow and strengthen without compromising a lady’s confidence and sense of style.

Consider your wallet, lifestyle and hair’s needs before deciding on which resting hairstyle will best suite your ethnic hair. Remember, the main reason for resting hairstyles is for the benefit of the real hair, resting it, feeding and nurturing it. Primary care needs to be focused on one’s natural locks. The visible wigs, weaves, and braids are not the cake, but the cherry on top. Don’t get it twisted!
