New Year, New Weave

Start your New Year right; start your New Year with the right weave! Here are a few useful tips on how to do so:

Use Human Hair ONLY
Stay away from synthetic hair. Synthetic hair is like plastic. If it’s braided into your natural hair, this can cause friction and may cause your hair to break.

Purchase a Quality Weave

Purchasing a cheap weave is not only a waste of your time, money and effort, but it just doesn’t look great. All it takes is a little bit more out of your pocket and you’ll be looking as fabulous as Beyoncé in no time! A good quality weave lasts longer, washes easily and doesn’t knot up as quickly as the latter.

Braid Your Weave in Properly
A great weave starts with a great foundation. Tracks should lay right on top of braids, and braids should be done horizontally starting at the perimeter of the hairline and ending in the middle of the head. Circular braids are a big no-no! Hair doesn’t grow naturally in a circular pattern, so braiding hair in this way can be stressful on your strands and may cause severe damage to your hairline.

Silk Thread is a Must
Use silk or nylon thread when braiding your weave in. Because they move with the hair, they don’t create as much friction which causes your hair to break. Opting for other thread, such as cotton, may cause your strands to become dry and brittle as cotton soaks up the natural oils in your hair.

Wash Your Hair Regularly
You should be washing your hair ideally every week with a scalp nourishing and cleansing shampoo, focusing on your scalp and not on the actual hair. With a weave, your natural hair is essentially “trapped”. This is why it needs to be washed frequently to remove any dirt on your scalp and to keep both your hair and scalp well-nourished and healthy.

Your weave may be a source of protection to your natural hair, but that does not mean you should neglect what God gave you. Before you go to bed, comb your natural hair away from your weave, toward your face. This goes especially for the edges of your hair. If you leave your natural hair to touch the track of the weave, it may break off. Give the edges of your hair a rest. Pair it with a silk scarf or silk cap for extra protection. This will also ensure that your weave isn’t a twisted mess the next day.
