How Often Should You Trim Your Hair

Hair tips on how often you should trim your hair according to your hair category.

Like most things in the beauty industry, determining how often you should cut your hair can be quite a daunting task. It’s also a very difficult issue to give extensive and universal advice on since we all have different ethnic backgrounds, types, colours and lengths of hair. Hopefully the grouped categories below will give you an indication of what to look out for when your hair starts to tell you it’s time for a much needed trip to the salon.

Short ‘n Sweet
If you have shorter hair that requires more styling than average hairstyles, then it would be a good idea to visit you hair dresser every 6 weeks. Trendy short hairstyles usually need more ‘tending’, and flyaway’s are more noticeable once they do start to grow out. Frequent visits will make your life way easier and will make styling a little laid-back.

Long and Luscious
Women are often deceived by the notion that longer hair doesn’t need to be cut very often because you just let it grow naturally, but this is definitely not the case. Having long hair myself, I know that the extra weight can often lead to broken strands that quickly turn into split ends. Longer hair should be trimmed every 10 weeks to keep those ‘forks’ at the end of every stand at bay. I would also suggest layering longer hair to take some weight and tension off.

Frizzy and Fierce
If your hair is frizzy, you probably spend way too much time with curling irons, hair dryers and tons of styling products to try calm the wild. Everyday tugging can break your hair effortlessly, especially if you use products that may make each follicle frail. You should visit your hair salon every 8 weeks to trim broken ends, and add a treatment to try to get your hair toughened up.

Under Cover Queen
If you’re a blonde gone brunette or grey gone red, your hair goes through quite a lot of torture. Despite using products made for colour treated hair, constant dying can be harsh for your hair and this could lead to many issues like dry, brittle ends. Dry ends look terrible ladies, so please try to see your hair stylist at least once a month. Nowadays, with home dye kits, we often self-diagnose our hair problems, but if left untreated, without professional advice, you may have to shave it all off.
