Your hair’s natural oil, sebum, keeps your hair soft, glossy and resilient. However, when too much builds up it can weigh your hair down. This makes it appear dull, lifeless and greasy. All you need is the right shampoo and hair care routine to help manage this problem. Want to know how? Follow the weekly hair care guide for oily hair below:

Monday:
Use a shampoo formulated for oily hair or that’s designed for daily use. These shampoos clean more effectively than normal shampoos as it’s specifically made to be gentle and won’t strip away the oil as harshly as other shampoos. combing oily hairBecause all shampoos are not the same, you may have to try out several brands before you find one that works best for your hair. Shampoos containing detergents like sodium lauryl sulfate or ammonium or natural astringents like lemon, tea tree or peppermint essential oils would be a good choice to make.

Once you have your shampoo, massage it into your scalp, create a lather and let it sit for a few minutes. If your hair is very oily, it may not lather the first time. Shampoo the hair for a second time, and make sure that you rinse your hair thoroughly to avoid residue build-up.

The next step is to apply conditioner. In most cases, oily hair does not need a conditioner. However, if you feel that conditioner is essential, use a light-weight conditioner or a conditioner targeted towards oily hair. Apply only a small amount to the ends of your hair. Never apply the conditioner to your roots. You will only risk making your hair look and feel greasier. Rinse the conditioner out properly, and style the hair as desired.

If you are going to blow-dry your hair, make sure to use a heat protecting product prior to blow-drying. Blow-dry your hair off your forehead. Keeping your hair away from your forehead will ensure that it doesn’t absorb the oils from your skin. Straighteners have made managing hair a lot easier, but they don’t solve an oily hair problem. They make your hair produce more grease from the heat of the straighthener and from touching your hair to straighten it. So, using a straightener regularly on your already oily hair is the worst mistake you could make. Using a straightener is asking for hair damage!

Tuesday:
After your usual daily hair wash, apply an oil-reducing hair treatment. Make sure you have rinsed all the shampoo out before applying anything to your hair. While there are oil-reducing hair treatments on the market, products of this kind can be very expensive. Natural astringents work just as well and, in some cases, ten times better in slowing down sebum production. Make your own astringent by blending the juice of two lemons with a quarter cup of water, or you can blend one teaspoon of vinegar with one pint of water. Both formulas make good astringents. Just pour the mixture through your hair and rinse it out with water, and style as usual. Say goodbye to oily hair the natural way!

Wednesday:
Give your hair a break! Although shampooing daily may prevent excess oils from building up, washing your hair that much can actually make your problem a lot worse. Over washing strips away all of your hairs natural oil and will cause your hair to produce even more oil than before. At the same time, it can also dry out your hair ends. Adding more problems to the problem is not what you want! Instead of washing your hair, you can refresh your locks with a can of dry shampoo. Massaging a bit of baby powder onto the scalp also works. Just be careful not to overdo these methods.

You can then style the hair as you wish. With regards to styling products, avoid serums and glossing products. Opt for light products such as hairspray to avoid overloading your strands. If you are going to comb or brush your hair, avoid brushing over your scalp. Brush and comb as infrequently as possible as doing so loosens the oil and will transfer it through your hair. Also, don’t touch your hair too much. Sweat and skin oils are transferred into your hair through touch making your oily hair worse. It is important that you wash your combs and brushes on the regular. Clean hair styling tools = clean hair. Simple!

Thursday:
Detoxify your hair with a clarifying shampoo. Excessive use of hair styling products can cause product build-up to develop. Whether your hair is prone to oily strands or greasy due to hair product overload, a clarifying shampoo should be used weekly. Clarifying shampoos don’t need to be used with a conditioner. These shampoos clarify and condition the hair and scalp in just one wash. Wash and rinse thoroughly. Then style as usual. Instead of using heat tools to style your hair, let it air dry instead. Air drying your hair is healthy and will reduce grease production from using heat tools.

Friday:
Clarifying shampoos are oil-reducing, so you might find that your hair is not as oily the next day. If it is, wash your hair with a daily shampoo. If it isn’t, use a dry shampoo to get rid of any unwanted oil in your hair. Dry shampoo also adds body and volume to the hair which helps to keep your hair from looking stringy and matted.
