DIY Beauty – Lush Inspired Lip Scrub

It’s not new news that LUSH beauty handmade cosmetics, bath and body products, has landed on South African soil. Fortunately for Capetonians, you can just waddle your bums over to the exciting store anytime you like and get your lush fix. But unfortunately for the rest of us, we have to sit by and wait until LUSH gets their online store up and running.

So while this luscious fan waits, I have decided to do a homemade lip scrub inspired by LUSH’s Pink Bubble gum lip scrub.

 What you will need:

What you need DIY Lipscrub
Castor sugar, your preferred essential oil (I used olive oil), your preferred essence (like the ones you bake with), food colouring (optional) and containers to place the scrub into.

Take 2 spoons of castor sugar and place it in a bowl. Add one table spoon of olive oil and mix together well. When it comes to adding your essence, it all comes down to personal preference. If you want a stronger scent then add more and vice versa. Just keep in mind that some essence’s can be quite bitter to taste so don’t go overboard. I added vanilla essence for a pink-vanilla lip scrub. Another note, if your essence is not clear or transparent, it will interfere with the colouring of your sugar. I added the brown vanilla essence and unfortunately my sugar turned a light brown colour. It isn’t the end of the world but you might need to take it into consideration when planning the colour of your scrub.

Once you have everything evenly mixed, you then add your food colouring. Rather add tiny amounts at a time to control how dark or light it is. I used a pink food colouring but added way too much so it ended up being a reddish kind of pink *oops*. I find that the pastel pink colour of LUSH’s bubble-gum lip scrub is really pretty and definitely something I would want lick off my lips!

After you have gotten the colour as close to what you want, transfer it into your container/s. Make sure they seal properly otherwise they will dry out pretty quickly and all your hard work will go down the drain.

Green Peppermint DIY Lipscrub

I tried a ‘green peppermint’ batch as well which I actually love way more than my ‘pink vanilla’ batch. I followed exactly the same steps above just adding peppermint essence and green food colouring. I did the same mistake, adding too much food colouring, so it looks a little like something the Grinch would make. Never the less, it smells really amazing!

Both the scrubs work really well and softly exfoliate the dry patches of skin. A helpful tip that I only figured out after doing my two batches, is if you are going to use olive oil, try get ‘light olive oil’ as is doesn’t have such a strong scent and you won’t have to add as much essence to get your scrub smelling yummy.

Now you have an easy DIY idea which is really simple and inexpensive. This is also a really simple beauty Christmas gift idea for your girlfriends.
