10 Beauty Rules to Break in 2015

2015 is the year of beauty freedom. Rather than writing up a list of beauty resolutions, we’re bringing back what beauty’s all about: self-expression and creativity. Here are 10 beauty rules that you shouldn’t be afraid to break this year:

1. Only wear eye shadows that compliment your eye colour

Do you have blue eyes? Well, according to established beauty rules, that limits you to warm browns. Contrary to popular belief, it’s not an exact science which shades will make your eye colour pop. The guides are just that…guides. Don’t let them stop you from experimenting.

2. Your brows and hair have to match.

Brows

2014’s statement brows are here to stay for 2015. What could be more striking than platinum blonde hair and dark brows? If Marilyn Monroe can do it, so can you. The same goes for slightly lighter brows paired with darker hair, as the look can brighten and enhance eye colour. Just ensure your brows are groomed to perfection at all times!

3. Oil-free products for oily skin.

Those suffering from oily skin are told to avoid products containing oil, but cleansing oils are remarkably well-suited to people with oily skin. Oil cleansers work on the scientific principle of like dissolving like: impurities bind to the oil, leaving your face squeaky clean without stripping it of moisture and natural oils.

4. Don’t wear dark lips and nails in summer.

Dark lips and nails are traditionally for autumn and winter, with tangerine dominating every summer season. Why limit yourself to seasonal colour palettes when dark lips look so amazing with beachy waves and a deep, rich nail colour enhances your tan?

5. Don’t use eyeliner or mascara on your bottom lashes.

Lashes

The theory is that lining or wearing mascara on your bottom lashes makes your eyes look narrower, but paying some attention to the lower lash line allows you to create the gorgeous, doe-eyed retro look that was big on the SS15 runways.

6. Focus on eyes or lips, not both.

Bold eye and lip

Why choose one when you can have it all? Beauty has advanced beyond plain old lipstick. There are lip options of varying intensities that work with even the boldest of smokey eyes. With balms, lacquers and stains, there’s no excuse for a bare, boring lip.

7. Grey hair is for old ladies.

Grey

2015 is the year of taking beauty risks. Going grey has always been considered a nightmare, but now it’s downright fashionable. If young celebs like Rihanna and Ellie Goulding are sporting edgy and elegant silvery locks, so can you.

8.  Your make-up shouldn’t match your outfit.

While matching your eye shadow to your outfit is best left in the 80s, your makeup can be a softer, sheerer version of the colour of your clothing. When you wear charcoal grey eyeshadow with a silver outfit, the colours enhance each other beautifully.

9. Glitter is tacky.

Whatever anyone tells you, you can wear glitter without looking like a disco ball. In fact, it can be downright classy, even on your most elegant of days: your wedding day. If you keep your outfit simple, glitter adds drama and texture without being overpowering.

10. Long hair is for your 20s.

Old lady long hair

There’s an unspoken beauty rule that long hair needs to be chopped off when you hit the big 4-0. However, this rule is just plain ageist: long hair that’s well-cared-for is gorgeous at any age. While the pixie cut is classically elegant, a shoulder-length cut is just as fun and youthful, if not more so, because it goes against beauty expectations.
