Wigs, Weave and Extensions – Care for Ethnic Hair

Take proper care for your wig, weave or extensions. Learn how to care for your Ethnic hair.

They say that change is as good as a holiday; however when it comes to your hair change can often be scary. Many South African women opt for a less permanent solution such as a wig or weave. If looked after correctly, your new look can be kept for a long period of time. You just need to follow these few steps and your new hair do will be worth every penny…you could even look at it as an investment of some sort!

So let’s begin with the care instructions for looking after your wig.

Synthetic Wig Care Instructions
Yes you can wash your wig, even if it is synthetic. You simply need:
•A Brush
•Shampoo Especially Formulated For Synthetic Wigs
•Conditioner Especially Formulated  For Synthetic Wigs
•Towel

Now if you have a synthetic wig that is straight, you can gently brush out the knots and tangles with a brush. If you have a curly or tight wig, you should gently brush out the kinks using your fingers. Once the knots are out, you should fill a basin or bucket with COLD water and two capfuls of your special shampoo. The wig should be turned inside out before immersing into the water. Swirl your wig in the water a few times and allow it to soak for approximately five minutes.

That gives you enough time to make some coffee and ponder on the finer things in life…

Rinse your wig gently in cold water until the shampoo has been completely removed. You are now able to apply 2 capfuls of your special wig conditioner. Allow conditioner to be absorbed by the wig for about three minutes. Rinse gently.

The next step is the drying process. You must not rub your wig dry; you should rather wrap it into a towel and pat dry it. Allow to stand, preferably on a wig stand, and let it air dry 100%

If you want your wig’s life span extended you should NEVER use heat on it. No hairdryers, curling irons or hair straightners. And ladies, stay away from flames. We know you are hot, but we don’t want to see you go up in flames!

NB. Wigs that are made with real human hair can be washed and treated the same as a synthetic wig; however you don’t need to use synthetic shampoo and conditioner. You may use a mild shampoo and conditioner as well as a regular one.

Extensions or Weave Care Instructions
If you have hair extensions or a weave, it is important to use the right products. Normally your hairstylist or hairdresser will advise you on which products will be better suited for you. Once you have your products you are ready to begin your caring process.

Before you wash your hair, you should gently brush out any tangles. When you are ready to wash your hair you should avoid rubbing your products into your hair. Gently pat your hair in a downward motion and wash gently.

Rinse in luke warm water and repeat this process with your special conditioner. When you are ready to dry your hair, wrap it in a towel and pat dry. Once again, avoid rubbing your hair. You should allow your hair to air dry as this allows the weave or extensions to last longer.

And that ladies, is how we here at Beauty Bulletin do it! Hope that this hair care tip will allow you the beauty that you deserve!
