We welcome Back Pantene’s Dr Gray- answering your hair questions: Part 2

Pantene’s Dr John Gray answere some questions for Beauty Bulletin.

Beauty Bulletin were so excited to have the Pantene hair expert, Dr John Gray back again and chatting with our community about everything  they wanted to know about their hair.

He was warmly welcomed by all our ladies on the Pantene Chat before they got asking away with their hair questions and concerns.

This is what Dr John Gray had to say:

PART 2:

·Sophia – minoxidil is available as a liquid and can be purchased as a foam (better) – in essence it is a sort of “fertiliser” for the hair which sustains growth. It has been around a long time and is safe to use long term.

·Children can certainly use the products their parents do – don’t forget that as their hair is not as damaged they only need say the Aqua light shampoo

·All in one products are fantastic for timesaving, in the shower after gym and rushing to work, for many guys as they don’t have the level of damage to the hair that unfortunately lady’s do. They have a relatively low level of conditioning compared to say Pantene Repair & Protect. Compare the choice you have now to say 20 years ago – all down to amazing research and development by Pantene scientists!

·Covering the hair does not damage it – however , the scalp may struggle to balance natural moisture loss and affect the hair. This is purely cosmetic so no harm done.

·Products are always developed on the basis that someone will apply them to children. The formulations are entirely safe – the KEY issue is volume applied. Most women instinctively work out how much to put in the hand before applying to the scalp and hair (at the roots hopefully) If washing a younger persons hair – remember , before puberty there will be little or no natural grease (sebum) and much less volume – so make an informed assessment of how much you need to apply to the hair

·Bed hair is interesting– Pantene scientists recently discovered how much damage we can really do particularly to long/wet hair at night. Important to physically arrange long hair over the pillow or arrange it in a loose style that won’t get scrunched

·Trim – average recommendation is 6 weeks but may depend on degree of damage – in which case more frequently

·Hair masques are essentially very concentrated conditioners which repair/protect severely damaged hair

·Problem with constant split ends – how far above the split is the stylist cutting. Should be minimum 3 centimetres if you are in this much trouble

·Retail and salon shampoos contain essentially the same type of ingredients. It is not correct to state that because it is a Salon product it is necessarily more effective

·Diet and hair growth – again lots of myths on this. In a normal adult a well-balanced diet containing all the essential elements, proteins, vitamins, etc is MORE than adequate for normal hair growth. There is NO scientific evidence that any particular food source is better than another NOR is there any evidence that taking vast amounts of a particular supplement makes any difference.

·Thick hair – often problems with volume control – Pantene Smooth & Sleek is best

·No cosmetic product can promote hair growth – only pharmaceutical ones such as Regaine (minoxidil). However, Pantene products can produce increased volume in the case of thinning hair by improving the diameter of the existing hairs

·Uncontrolled hypothyroidism is a well-recognised medical cause of thinning hair – adequately treated by your doctor and the hair will recover

·Beer and raw egg – Granny’s old fall back – does have an element of scientific basis for removing grease and dirt but aesthetics hardly in tune with today’s practices and not that great at conditioning compared to modern products

·Hair loss on thyroid treatment – ask for a dermatologists assessment to make sure you don’t have Female Pattern Hair loss as well
hair loss

·Genes and good hair care is right. Also , given that we like to change the way we look – try not to stray TOO far away from the way mother-nature intended you to be. Black hair bleached to white is a death sentence to it – only good thing is that unlike skin, if you ruin it – cut it off and start again

·Unless there is gross damage to the hair follicle (which is very deep) from negligent hair practices – NO cosmetic product applied at the surface – including hot oils , shampoos and conditioners – can affect hair growth. In order to do that they would have to corrode the skin down to a depth equivalent to the source of the Nile from the Nile delta

·For an itchy scalp a highly efficient shampoo such as Pantene can be sensed by individuals with particularly “sensitive skin”, This is more a mark of the weakness of other products and invariably over time this sensation declines and disappears.

· For ethnic hair select the intensive conditioners from the Pantene range and try them – I think you will be pleasantly surprised

·For urticaria (a recognised cause of “sensitive skin”- very difficult medical condition to manage) Almost anything can set it off – in the worst cases – even light touch, so shampooing is a certainty to precipitate it . Needs to see a dermatologist with speciality in this most distressing condition and often needs long term treatment

·Hair cannot be the same all over and does not behave the same all over, particularly if you have damaged it with bleaching, excessive heat plus the environmental damage. Make an honest assessment of its needs root to tip. Have the tips regularly trimmed, condition from tip towards the root and debate whether a masque once or twice a week is needed.

·The concentration of chemicals in shampoos is SO low that it is impossible to be “allergic” to them . You may have sensitive skin which does not tolerate a particular formulation but this does NOT mean you are allergic. Shop around for a light formulation like Pantene Aqua Light

After such an informative and fantastic learning experience with Dr John Gray, it has been an absolute pleasure having him chat to our community about everything hair. We, at Beauty Bulletin have too learned a great deal and cannot wait to get our hair looking its best with Dr John Gray’s advice and of course Pantene!

Thank you Dr John Gray and Pantene.
