Winter is here, bringing it with the threat of rain-splashed faces, ruined mascara and the dreaded panda eyes. Be smart, get yourself a rain-proof mascara.

We put some of our favourites to the test:

1. THE PRODUCT: Catrice Better than False Lashes Waterproof Mascara in Black(R80, Dis-Chem)

THE TEST: A rainy run on the Cape Town’s Sea Point promenade.

THE VERDICT:

Upon application, lashes appeared fuller and longer. Post run however, mascara had flaked off and collected under the eyes creating the dreaded panda look.

2. THE PRODUCT: GOSH Amazing Length n’ Build Mascara in Black (R89, Edgars)

THE TEST: A steam-room session at our local gym.

THE VERDICT

A budget-friendly product with thick black pigments for a striking effect and great wearability in dry conditions. When exposed to clouds of steam though, it did flake off a little.

3. THE PRODUCT: Maybelline Volume Express ‘The Rocket’ Mascara in Very Black (R124.95, Dis-Chem)

THE TEST: A splash of H2O.

THE VERDICT

You would expect even the most expensive mascara to run when drowned in a fistful of water, but not this one! A winter winner for sure, it’s affordable and creates long, flake- and streak-free, dramatic lashes.

4. THE PRODUCT: Bourjois Volume Clubbing Waterproof and Tear-Proof Mascara in Absolute Black (R134.95, Dis-Chem)

THE TEST: Our favourite tearjerker, The Notebook.

THE VERDICT

Wetter than its competitors, this mascara came out thick and made our lashes appear full and very black, but alas, it was no match for Ryan Gosling and The Notebook. It flaked a little and caused our tear-drops to turn black and streak down our cheeks, although our lashes did remain thick and full.

5. THE PRODUCT: Stila Stay All Day Volumizing Waterproof Mascara. (R210, www.zando.co.za)

THE TEST: A 1 hour hot Yoga class

THE VERDICT:

After countless downward dogs and three attempts at a headstand, the Stila Mascara had moistened slightly and had run onto my top lids. Standing with my feet on the ground however, the mascara was stuck to my lashes and was only removable with numerous soaked cotton wool disks.
