The Perfect Pouf – Hairstyle

When I am looking for an easy drama filled hairdo that I can throw together in 10 minutes, the pouf is my go-to hairstyle. Pair it with a fishtail braid, a slicked back ponytail, a chic up-do or leave your locks loose and you have instant glam.
You will need 3 bobby pins, a normal brush/fine tooth comb, a small barrel brush with thick stiff bristles, hairspray and hair shine serum.

To start with, section away the hair that you will not be working with (tie back in ponytail), however, make sure to leave a portion of the front middle section of your hair loose, so that you can easily work with it to create the perfect pouf!
The trick to the perfect pouf is to tease your hair as this will guarantee the necessary height. I find it easiest to start working on small sections of hair at a time, working from the back to the front. Grab a small section of hair about 3-5cm in width and hold it separately from the rest of your ‘pouf hair’…now brush this hair through with a normal brush/comb ensuring that there are no knots present. Once you have brushed through your hair, take the small barrel brush with thick bristles and place this brush behind the section of hair you want to tease and brush your hair in a downwards direction (towards your scalp) in short quick strokes from the middle to the roots of this section of hair (if you focus on the roots, you will have extreme volume). By teasing the hair from the back it will give the added volume you desire without making it difficult to smooth down. However, if you tease the hair from the front and back it adds knots, becomes too stiff and is then difficult to manoeuvre into the pouf. You may find your hair appears to be knotting up…but don’t worry this is just a sign that the teasing is working its magic and you will get rid any knots very soon.

Once you have completed teasing this section of hair, very gently run your fingers through that section of hair to ensure that there are no knots and smooth the hair down. Lightly apply hair spray to the teased section of hair if you want your pouf to have extra staying power (apply hair spray after teasing each section of hair if desired). Carefully repeat this teasing technique on the entire front middle section of hair that you want to form part of the pouf, you may need to repeat this teasing technique 4-5 times or more depending on the thickness of your hair. If you feel your hair has too much volume once you have completed teasing it, gently brush your hair…it will loosen the teased effect.

If you are after mega height then pin the pouf close to your forehead and if you want less height then pin the pouf further away from your forehead. Work on pinning back the pouf in 3 sections, the left, the middle and the right section. Pin back the middle section first so that your pouf is correctly centered thus ensuring that the pouf gradually lowers in height when you pin back the two side sections. The two side sections must be pinned near to the base of where the middle section is pinned as this ensures that the pouf will be even in size and height.

Once you are happy with the pouf, you are now ready for the final step of applying some hair shine serum to your pouf hairstyle and you’re good to go!
