The Dummies Guide to Skincare Ingredients!

Hyaluronic acid, peptides, triglycerides; we’ve all seen them listed on the side of our favourite skincare products, but do any of us know exactly what they’re there for? Or what they do?

Fear not, as we take you on a journey of the key ingredients found in the new Olay Regenerist range, and tell you how they’re benefitting your skin.

Hyaluronic Acid:

Hyaluronic acid is a molecule that is found naturally in our bodies and assists in lubricating our joints and keeping our skin hydrated. When found in skincare this molecule helps to lock in moisture in the skin. The molecule itself is too large to be absorbed into the skin when applied topically, so it sits on top of the skin, keeping all the healthy hydrating ingredients locked in and also attracting water from the environment to keep your skin feeling hydrated, happy and most importantly, younger looking!

Cell-Communicating Ingredients:

These are ingredients that ‘talk’ to your cells and tell them how to behave. They also stop other elements from disrupting a healthy cell function. Sounds crazy, right? It may do, but it really happens!

Niacinamide:
Or Vitamin B3 as it’s also known is a potent cell communicating ingredient and is known to improve skin’s elasticity, water content, skin tone and texture. For this ingredient to work effectively the skin needs to be properly protected from the sun everyday.

Peptides:
Peptides are short chains of amino acids that, when lengthened, form a protein. The shorter chains can penetrate the top layer of our skin and tell our cells how to function correctly. Peptides kick start the production of collagen in our skin, which usually slows down as we age. The new Olay Regenerist includes amino-peptides which visibly regenerate the skin.

Anti-irritants:
Every skin type will experience some sort of irritation regardless of whether they suffer from sensitive skin or not. Anti-irritants allow the skin time to heal and reduce the effects of external skincare aggressors.

Allantoin:
Even the smallest amount of this natural chemical compound is beneficial to the skin. It soothes skin and also promotes cell replication so is ideal for healing wounds.

Antioxidants:
Our skin is constantly under attack from sun damage, pollution and environmental factors, which can cause dull, dry, wrinkled skin. To reduce and prevent this damage you need to apply a cocktail of antioxidants to your skin daily. Olay Regenerist includes antioxidants such as vitamin E, which boosts collagen production (the stuff that makes your skin plump) and Camellia Sinesis leaf extract, which is also known as green tea. Camellia Sinensis is a great anti-inflammatory which is also known to protect the skin from harmful UV rays, but don’t rely on it solely for protection from the sun!

Sun Protecting Ingredients:

Octisalate, Avobenzone, Octocrylene, Ensulizole:
What it does: These are all chemical protectors that absorbs harmful UVA and UVB rays, which are the main cause of skin damage and cancer.
