Makeup How To: The Classic ‘Smokey’ Eye

smokey makeupStep One: Once the skin is prepped by cleansing toning and moisturizing, you take foundation and apply it over the eye area only. If needed you can use a concealer mixed in with the foundation to thicken it and to provide more coverage. The purpose of this is to get the eyelids smooth and even toned so you can apply liberally.

Step Two: The next step is to powder the eyelid so that it is dry and the foundation sets. You will now have a smooth surface to apply the eye shadows onto. This ensures that the eye shadow will last longer and will be easier to work with and blend.

Step Three: Now decide on the eye shadow colours you are going to use. Pick a light, medium and a dark colour. Take your light colour and apply this to the entire lid up to the eyebrow. You can apply this with a soft brush and actually brush the colour on in a sweeping motion.
Now we take our medium colour (that is your main colour) and apply it to the eyelid taking the colour up to the crease only! Ensure that you pat the colour onto the eyelid and do not brush it on; this will help the colour to stay longer and be more intense. Do this with a flat brush and only apply up to the crease.

Take your blending brush and blend this colour around the edges so that there is no hard line. You blend by doing tiny soft circular motions.

The next step is to use the dark eye shadow. Use the pencil brush to strategically place the dark shadow so that it creates a 3d effect. Add some of this colour on the bottom lash line. Don’t put too much product on the brush – rather use a little then blend then add more. If you put too much on it’s difficult to correct! Now the blending is what completes and beautifies your look so focus on this. TIP: If you have an extra brush it is sometimes helpful to use a clean brush with no product on to actually blend the edges!

Step Four: We can now apply eyeliner. I like to use a pencil and an eye shadow together but either one works great on its own. A liquid liner can be used but this creates a hard line and is slightly more difficult to use. When using the pencil make sure that you have pulled the eye outwards so that you are able to draw a straight line. It’s also important to work in-between the lashes and make sure that the line is not too thick on the lid. Soften this by setting it and slightly smudging this with the eye shadow of the same colour (e.g. black/brown).

Step Five: Next step is to clean the face with a wipe or cleanser and apply moisuriser, primer and foundation. Work that foundation into the skin using a brush your hand or a sponge. Be careful with the sponge as it does absorb product I prefer to pat the product in with the sponge and rather apply it with a brush or my hands. I now do my blusher (if I am using a cream blusher) place it on the apple of the cheeks and generally as we will still powder! Remember: It’s important to make sure that your foundation matches your skin tone. Rather use a bronzer to warm up the face and get that bronzed summer look as opposed to getting darker foundation ladies! (You all know you do it!)

Step Six: Now we can lightly powder or if you want the look to last longer we can powder quite heavily. Only use translucent powder so that the powder does not change the colour of the foundation and so that it does not sit on the skin and make the face look like you have caked on the foundation. Bronze the face to achieve that healthy glow.

Step Seven: Curl lashes if needed. Add mascara. Apply top and bottom of the upper eyelashes, be careful when applying the top as it weighs the lashes down if this proves too difficult just do the lashes from the bottom up. Now do the lower lashes in a side to side movement!

Step Eight: Fill in the eyebrows with a powder shadow matching your colour brows!

Step Nine: Find a lip liner that is the same colour as the lipstick you use. Colour in your lips with the liner then apply your lipstick and powder it! This makes it set; you can then apply another layer of lipstick/gloss.

Step Ten: Take a highlighter and highlight areas of the face… like the nose and upper cheek bones!

Step Eleven: There is none! Now go out and rock the world with this classic makeup trend!!!
