Steam Room Benefits

At many gyms, spas and holiday resorts, you will find saunas/steam rooms. You sit in these rooms for about 15-20mins at a time and simply sweat. This is quite an off putting ordeal (in my opinion), but the health benefits of these steam rooms are pretty endless.

The number one reason why people sit in steam rooms, and the most common benefit, is to detox their skin and improve their skin complexion. The heat from the steam opens your skins pores to flush out dirt and any other nasty things our skin gathers throughout the day.

Another great skin benefit, from sitting in a steam room, is the fact that it increases our heart rate, which in turn increases blood flow. This is especially good for the capillaries near the surface of your skin. It will plump up your skin and give you a more youthful glow.

Sitting in a steam room relaxes your muscles, joints and nerves, which has been proven to give people “a better/deeper sleep”. Sleeping better gives your skin time to regenerate and heal from daily air and sun exposure.

Adding aromatherapy oils to a steam room or a steam machine can give your body a relaxed sensation and can calm your mind.

Sweating in a steam room can help your organs (your kidneys etc.) as it gets rid of excess toxins. Breathing deeply in a steam room can help aid people who suffer from repertory conditions, such as a ‘tight’ chest, difficulty breathing and asthma.

Steam machines can be bought at most pharmacies, but they carry quite a heavy price. My advice for a cheaper alternative; run a hot shower until your whole bathroom is filled with steam. Then sit back and relax. This is quite a traditional remedy for sick children. I always remember my mom adding Vicks to our steam machine when I had difficulty breathing.
