Shades of Grey – Smokey Eyes Makeup

What makeup look can be more perfect for a night on the town than a smouldering smokey eye? There seems to be so many different versions and ideas of what the perfect smokey eye looks like, but the ground rules I follow are simple: dark shadow on the lid and lots of eyeliner.
Here are a few tips to help you achieve that perfect smokey look:

• Always prep your lids with a primer or concealer – you want to create a smooth base for perfect eye shadow application. This will help your make-up stay on for longer as well.

•Apply an eye shadow in a similar colour to your natural skin tone to the whole eye area – this will assist in the blending process. If you don’t have a    shadow for this task, you face powder will do a good job as well.

•Start with the darkest eye shadow colour at the base of your upper lashes and smoke it up towards the brow.

•Concentrate the colour at the lash line.

•Blend, blend, blend! (Perfect blending takes time to master. My top tip: apply your shadow with one brush and use a separate brush to blend the shadow out).

•Finish off the smoke effect by applying the same dark shade under the lower lashes.

•Line the upper and lower lash line. Depending on the look you want to create, you can use pencil, liquid or powder.

•For extra oomph I like to line the waterline as well.

•Lashings of mascara round this look off perfectly.

My favourite look at the moment is the grey smokey eye.
For a softer look that can even be worn in the daytime, use matte dove grey eye shadows and line the eyes with a darker shade. This look worn by Hillary Duff is stunningly subtle:

For a look that packs more of a punch, use darker greys and line the eyes with dark grey or black. Kristen Stewart looks ultra sexy on the red carpet with her dark smokey eyes:

With this pretty palette from The Body Shop you can achieve Kristen’s look.

It even comes with step-by-step instructions. How cool is that?

There are so many options, even with a seemingly boring colour like grey – matte, shimmer, glitter, light, dark… whatever floats your boat! Pair it with other colours and create a completely new look. Makeup is supposed to be fun; play around.
