Makeup Looks to Avoid

They may look great at a costume party, but these makeup looks just don’t work – not on you or your best friend, so don’t feel like the odd one out!

Overly-Accentuated Eyebrows
Big, bold, beautiful brows are the rage this season. It’s when they are too bold that things go haywire! When filling in your eyebrows, make sure to wipe the excess formula off the bristles of your eyebrow pencil or eyebrow mascara. Apply the product as lightly as possible, and then work your way up.

Crazy-Dramatic Eye Shadow
This is the look to go for if you plan on looking like a drag queen! Mixing of eye shadow is complex, but also really simple. If you want to do a multi-tonal eye look, stick to eye shadow shades that fall in the same colour family. You can easily pick up a pre-made palette with similar eye shadow shades inside.

A Milky Lip Colour
Gross and rather sickly-looking, a milky lip colour is not and NEVER will be flattering. Instead, go for a straight-up nude lip colour with a pink undertone.

Too Much Blush or Bronzer
Too much blush will have you looking like a clown, and too much bronzer will leave you looking dirty. The trick with these makeup products is to be very light-handed with application. You will also need the correct brush to pick up the right amount of product and blend the product in perfectly for an au natural and fresh-faced look.

Lining Your Lips with Black Liner
Black lip liner is a big no, no, especially if it is being paired with a light shade of lipstick! Even if you decide to wear a dark lip shade, such as burgundy or brick red, using true black liner to line your lips is a sin. You should always use a lip liner that’s closest to the shade of your lipstick and always make sure to blend it out properly towards the centre of your lips, so that it doesn’t appear too harsh.

Heavily-Contoured Cheekbones
I’m sure we’ve all seen it… the curious case of contouring gone wrong! The secret to having that gorgeous naturally chiselled look is knowing your highlighting shades from your contouring shades, where each shade needs to be used, how much of each product needs to be used and finally, BLENDING – the most important step of all!

Lashes That Are Too Long and Have Designs on Them
There’s one word for this look: Scary! Don’t do this to yourself, unless you want to freak people out on purpose!

Full-On Lip Glitter
Lip glitter may look glamorous, but trust me it doesn’t feel all that fantastic. Avoid the blunder of getting glitter everywhere (and you eating mass amounts of glitter every time you move your lips!), and opt for a shimmery lip gloss.

Black Lipstick
Black eye shadow? Yes. Black eyeliner? Yes. Black lipstick? Hell no! Some makeup products are best suited in a black shade. Lipstick isn’t one of them. Apply a vampy burgundy or oxblood shade over your lips instead. This is very chic and on trend at the moment.

All-Over Metallics
Metallics on your eyes, cheeks, lips and everywhere will leave you looking like a street performer! If you want to wear metallics, pick one area to focus on and keep the rest of your face neutral.

Over-Extended Eyeliner
You can never go wrong with winged eyeliner, unless it’s extended beyond your eyebrow or past the inner corner of your eye and halfway down your nose. Give your eyeliner some boundaries. Keep it simple and classy.

Red Eye Shadow
Dabbing red eye shadow too close to your eyes without any eyeliner will make them look tired instantly and give the whites of your eyes an unattractive red cast. To avoid this problem, apply black eyeliner first and then apply the red eye shadow onto the rest of your eyelid. The black acts as a barrier, breaking up the look up, which in turn makes the red eye shadow shade wearable.

Blacked-Out Eyes
Blacked-out eyes – when smoky eyes turn into raccoon eyes! Cringe! This 360-degree look is too hard and rough. Go for something less heavy-looking and decide whether or not you want to accentuate just the top or bottom part of your eye.
