Is it really possible to achieve even tone skin in ethnic skin?

A lot of black women suffer from uneven toned skin. This can be caused by various factors such as hormones, heredity, the sun, as well as acne. Some cases are worse than others, but there seem to be many products available to help you deal with uneven skin tone.

With so many products to even skin tone (or promising to) in a few weeks or even a few days, you are left wondering why everyone in the street doesn’t have perfect and flawless skin. A lot of them, especially the ones geared for black women are quite affordable and promise to give you perfectly even toned and lighter skin.

For those with uneven skin tone, they’ll testify that they’ve tried a lot of different products and they are yet to find one that actually works. Unfortunately, each individual has specific causes for their uneven skin tone, and so require different products and treatments. A certain product can work wonders on your friend, but do nothing for you.
With the above in mind, you may need to understand the causes of uneven skin tone in black people. The major causes of hyperpigmentation are:
· Acne
· Exposure to the sun
· Hormones
· Heredity

In addition to this, the pigmentation can be superficial, in the epidermal layers or deeper in the skin. Superficial dark areas can be cleared easily with exfoliation and using products for uneven skin tone. Those in the epidermal layer can be more difficult to even out, but specialised products for uneven skin tone can be effective. Hyperpigmentation in deeper layers of the skin are very difficult to remove and may even need laser treatment by a dermatologist to get rid of.
If you are able to, visit a dermatologist so that they tell you what level your hyperpigmentation is and they will give you advice and information on the best treatments for your case.

One very important thing to remember, as a black woman, is that, you are not immune to the darkening effects of the sun….even in winter. Whatever the level of hyperpigmentation you are suffering from, exposure to the sun makes it worse. So a good place to start is to get a daily moisturiser with at least an SPF of 15.
Some people will sing praises about a certain product because it has helped to clear away acne scars or dark patches caused by hormonal changes. You may try it, but it’ll not work as well or not at all. You’ll then move on to the next product in the hope that maybe one day you’ll find the right even tone product for you.

Instead of going through the emotional rollercoaster of trial and error, visiting your dermatologist will give you information on the causes of hyperpigmentation in your skin and so, find the right product for you.
Otherwise, there are some fantastic full coverage foundations, BB creams, and concealers available on the market. It might be a temporary solution to your uneven skin tone, but it can be an effective one.
