How To Make Your Curls Last

There’s nothing worse than spending hours on creating the perfect curl, only to have your beautiful, bouncy ringlets go limp the minute you flaunt them.

Luckily, there are ways to avoid being flat-haired and frustrated. Here are a few to keep in mind if you want enviable curls that will last throughout the day and into the night:

Use day old hair
Slightly dirty hair is much easier to style. It holds a curl in more effectively, and a lot longer than squeaky-clean locks. So, don’t feel bad for leaving your hair for just one day. The oil won’t harm you.

Use the right products
Curl-enhancing and style-holding products are key to achieving voluminous curls that last all day. You should make use of the following hair care products if you want killer curls:

  1. Curl activating shampoos and conditioners – these products work with the texture of your hair, helping to bring out and enhance your curls. We love Marc Anthony Strictly Curls Collection.
  2. A volumizer – whether it’s a gel, mousse or cream form, it will give your hair much needed lift, as well as a foundation for styling.  We love Tresemme 24 Hour Body Foaming Mousse.
  3. Heat protecting spray – since your hair is exposed to a high source of heat from hot styling tools, you should always apply a heat protecting spray to protect and prevent your hair from possible heat damage. We love Schwarzkopf Gliss Total Repair Heat Protection Spray.
  4. Anti-frizz serum – this will keep fly-aways and frizzy ends at bay, allowing your curls to hold throughout the day. We love John Frieda® Frizz Ease® Hair Serum.
  5. Hairspray – all you need is a light misting of a firm holding spray to keep your curls in place. We love Toni & Guy Glamour Firm Hold Hairspray.
Tip: Stay away from deep conditioners or any products that weigh your hair down. Listen to what your hair wants, and it will listen to you.

Use product correctly and sparingly
The number one reason why curls fail is because of using hair products incorrectly. Besides knowing what to use, knowing how it should be used is just as important. There are three things you should keep in mind when it comes to hair products and your curls:

  1. Apply your curl setting spray or lotion to each section of your hair before you begin curling. This increases the chances that they will last. A dime or quarter-sized amount will do.
  2. Don’t forget to apply the product underneath your hair as well. The more hold you have within the style, the better it will hold throughout the day.
  3. Set your curls with a mist of firm holding hairspray. Retouching with hairspray during the day is also vital for keeping your style in. Just be careful not to go overboard, unless you want heavy, crunchy curls that are bound to go flat in an instant.

Use the right toolscurling-iron
If you are going to use a hair iron to curl your hair, go for a thin ceramic flat iron with round edges. The round edges will ensure that you get the most beautiful curls you could ever wish for. If you prefer using a curling iron, use a clampless ceramic curler. Curling irons with clamps may have your curls end up deflated and shapeless. If you have a lot of time on your hands, invest in hair rollers. From loose waves to ringlets and even small curls, rollers can give you any shape of curl you want, and hold them in for a long period of time. And, most importantly, whether you are using a flat or curling iron, or rollers, make sure to clip up each curl as you go along. Wrapping the curl up and pinning it in place will retain its shape, and make it last longer.

Take your time
The curling process can be tedious and frustrating, especially for those of us with extremely long or thick hair. But, if you really want your curls to last, you will take your time with them. Start by sectioning your hair off, and then begin curling one section at a time. If you don’t feel for all that trouble and the arm workout that comes with it, use hair rollers instead.
