How to get rid of split ends – Hair Tips

Everybody gets them and everybody hates them, here is the most necessary hair tip. Split ends are a sight for sore eyes as they cause breakage and make your hair look dull.

So how does one get rid of them? There is only one way to truly get rid of split ends, and that is to cut them off. If you do not cut off your spilt ends your hair will spilt further up.

Do not fall for so-called miracle products that promise the world. Once your hair is split no serum or oil will be able to make it whole again. What these products do is weigh the cuticle down to make it appear that the split ends have been repaired, when in fact they have not. Once you stop using these products, your split ends will reappear, and most of them will be longer than before. Think of these products like foundation and concealer, they’ll hide your blemishes and dark spots, but not take them away.

Even though some people will get split ends no matter what they do to their hair, if you take proper care of your hair you can prevent split ends or delay them splitting higher.

A few tips to prevent split ends:

If you must use heat on your hair, always use a heat protectant. Make sure that the heat defence spray or mouse you are using is high enough for the amount of heat you are using, especially if you are using a flat iron or curling tongs. Also reduce the amount of chemicals you use on your hair. These weaken the shaft and cause it to split. Only let stylists who know what they are doing put chemical treatments on your hair as they will ensure that your hair remains as healthy as possible. Also it is important that you do not brush your hair when wet has hair is at its weakest when wet. Wet hair can spilt or break easily, if you detangle your hair when it’s wet always use a wide tooth comb.

If you’re growing out your hair you need to get your split ends trimmed. Once your hair is split it will break off and the higher the split the more hair will break off, which means your hair will look like it is not growing. Even if your hair does not break off it will look dry, dull and damaged. Personally I would not recommend getting your hair trimmed every 4-6 weeks (as some stylists do), especially not if you’re growing out your hair. Just like hair growth, everyone’s hair splits at a different rate. If your hair doesn’t split easily, you can wait a few months before getting your ends trimmed. If your hair is long enough, bring it to the front and analyse the ends. If you have a few short splits (about 2 millimetres) then just chop them off, but don’t do this too often or you may end up with an uneven hemline. This way you can delay a big trim.

When it comes to big trims, I self-trim my hair about every two to three months, and when I do I take off less than a centimetre and that’s enough to get rid of my splits. Remember to use a sharp pair of scissors that’s meant for hair. If you’re not confident in cutting your own hair, make sure that you find a hairdresser you can trust.
