How To Deal With Facial Hair

Facial Hair Beauty Bulletin 2Have you noticed that you have more facial hair as you have gotten older? I have blonde hair so I have never really worried about my blonde “moustache” . My darker haired friends have always bleached or waxed the hair above their upper lip, simply because it’s more noticeable on a brunette.

I have always felt lucky that I haven’t had to worry. Lately though, I have noticed that there is just a little more down than there was before and the odd dark hair. This is most definitely a no-no! Obvious facial hair may be great on the bearded lady at the circus, but it’s not for me!

More hair on your face (called “hirsutism” if you want the fancy term) could be as a result of abnormal hormonal levels or if you are suffering from polycystic ovarian syndrome.

As we age though, our bodies do tend to lose oestregen that normally combats the testosterone levels and that is when we start to see characteristics that are normally associated with men, like thinning hair and facial hair.

Fortunately, I haven’t hit that stage yet!  However, more peach fuzz on my face tends to interfere with my foundation, as it gets trapped on the little hairs, so I like to rid myself of the problem altogether.

If you have started noticing more of a “moustache” or excess peach fuzz on your face, first check with your doctor to make sure there are no underlying issues. Here are some tips to deal with this “hairy” issue…

Professionals advise that you NEVER shave your facial hair as, instead of being peach fuzz, it will grow back much more stiff and coarse than before. If you only want to extract a few darker hairs, then plucking them with a tweezer is fine, but probably too painful to do a whole bunch of hair.

A more permanent option is electrolysis. Here a needle is inserted into the skin to kill the cell that resulted in that hair growth. This is, unfortunately, not a good option for darker skinned ladies as it could cause noticeable scarring.

Laser treatment is another option, but is also not appropriate if you have dark or olive-toned skin as it can actually result in hyperpigmentation.

Bleaching the area is a great solution if you have dark hair and you just want to make it less noticeable.

Maryanne Facial Hair HushWaxing and threading are both good options if you have a high pain threshold. I find threading more painful than waxing to be honest. I love having my brows threaded, but when it comes to threading I have had the hair on my upper lip done a few times by a well-trained lady ( she trained in India!) and I still have wanted to die from the pain. Especially around the nose!

By far my favourite solution is using a good depilatory especially designed for the face. I love Hush’s hair removing cream for sensitive areas and Veet also has a great one. Just take great care to follow the instructions exactly to avoid chemical burns.
