How To…Create an On Trend Smokey Eye.

The new smokey eye uses a spectrum of greys, from gunmetal to dove. Jazz up your look using the steps below:

Step 1: Ensure your peepers are prepped correctly by applying an eye cream, like the Eucerin Dermo Densifyer Eye & Lip Contour. Conceal any blemishes or dark circles using a concealer, like the creamy Yardley StayFast CoverFlage Concealer (from R69). The final step in your prep is to apply a primer to your lids. Our favourite is the Smashbox Photo Finish 24hr Shadow primer (R230), which ensures eyeshadow stays put.

Step 2: Define your lash line using a black eye pencil. Line both your lower and inner upper lash lines using the Revlon ColorStay Eyeliner Pencil in Black, which glides on effortlessly, with no snagging or pulling.

Step 3: For clean and easy application, dust some translucent powder under your eyes before applying your eyeshadow of choice. This will allow for you to easily brush away any eyeshadow flecks that may fall on your cheeks during your application, without smudging eye shadow all over your face. Our pick is the MAC Prep+Prime Transparent Finishing Powder (R320).

Step 4: It’s time to apply colour to your lids! Using a brush apply a shimmering grey eyeshadow to your lower and upper lash line, flicking it out at the corners of your eyes to create a cats eye. Blend it above the crease too. Using a black eye shadow, trace the colour along your bottom lash line as well as from the middle of your eyelid to the outer corners of your eye. Our current favourite grey palette is the Rimmel Glam Eyes Quad Eye Shadow in Smokey Noir (R109.95), while our pick of black shadow is the MAC eyeshadow in Black Tied (R195).

Step 5: For an extra touch of elegance apply a thin line of black liquid liner to your upper lash line. We adore the Stila Waterproof Stay-All-Day Liquid Eyeliner (R225).

Step 6: Many of us are terrified of eyelash curlers but they really are a wonderful device. Not only do they make your lashes look longer but they also open up your eyes. Next swipe on a coating of black mascara to your top lashes. We love Lancôme Hypnôse Doll Eyes Mascara (R335) that really gives you Twiggy-esque lashes!
