Hair Dryers 101 – Hair Care

I’ve always believed that great hairstyles start with great hair styling tools. The foundation should be a reliable and professional hair dryer.

There’s a myriad to choose from, starting from cheap to steep, but ideally you want something with wattage of around 2000.
Hair dryers have come a long way and today’s technology is filled with words like negative ions, infrared, nano technology etc. What does all this mean for your hair?

You want a hair dryer that releases negative irons as they dry your hair quicker without absorbing too much moisture from the hair shaft. So less heat means healthy, shiny and frizz free hair provided you blow dry aiming down the hair shaft, this seals the cuticle. Standard hair dryers are different as they emit positive ions thus doing the exact opposite which ultimately leads to longer drying times and heat damaged hair (think split ends) and we definitely don’t want that.

Ionic hairdryers don’t come cheap. Bionic Hair range has 2 ionic dryers that start from R880 (on sale currently) see Bionic’s online shop. ghd hair tools also has an ionic hair dryer offering of their own, their price is much more at R1499. If their flat irons are anything to go by then I’d say this product is a worthy investment. If that’s not in your price range then Remington might be an option for you. They have a cheaper option retailing for R659.

Both Bionic and GHD claim that their hairdryers will reduce drying time up to 50%. For someone like me who has naturally curly hair this is a godsend.

Infrared hair dryers have the same benefits as ionic ones i.e. heats hair up from the inside out, distributes heat evenly, dries hair quicker and locks in moisture. This should be a no brainer, but its best to use heat protection when using heat appliances. Blow dry hair with a round barrel brush; I always go with the biggest I can find as it makes the blow drying much easier and helps provide that perfect hairstyle.
