Greying gracefully

gray-hair-225300Are you starting to notice more grey/white hairs popping up along your hairline or path? I am ( eeek)! These hairs are coarse and frizzy, not sleek like the rest of my hair. Every time I see one I reach for those tweezers and zap it out, but these days they are popping up more frequently!

Now I know that old hair myth that if you pull out one, 10 grow back isn’t true, but it sure feels that way! What is really happening is that when you pull one out, it just grows back and is more obvious since it’s shorter and coarser than the rest of your hair.

So why do we go grey? Our kids!? Hee hee, nope they aren’t really the reason. As we grow older our hair cells start producing less pigment, so your hair is actually losing its colour, not actually turning grey or white. Mine are white. Snow white. So, since I am basically blonde they are less noticeable right now. But what am I going to do as they become more obvious?

These days we have a number of options open to us. You can choose to colour your hair to cover up those greys. Semi-permanent hair colour lasts for about twelve washes. Demi-permanent hair colour lasts twice as long. Permanent hair colour lasts longer, but then you have to constantly touch up for regrowth.

Another solution is to add strategic highlights or lowlights, which can help blend in grey hair and you can slowly go grey hair out without the patchy look.

If you are currently using a permanent colour to cover greys, opt for semi-permanent in a lighter shade and gradually start to go towards your more natural colour.

If you are in a hurry to get to your more natural grey and have been colouring your hair, why not cut your hair into a short pixie style to avoid the ombre effect and cut off most of the coloured sections of hair.

Remember that grey hair needs extra hydration, so make sure you change your shampoo and conditioner to something more moisturising. We love L’Oreal’s Nutri Gloss range. Treat your hair to weekly masques and hot oil treatments. If your hair is a little frizzy look for serums and shine sprays to give your hair a smooth and sleek look.

Grey and white hair have a tendency to turn yellow and dull, so make sure you use something like Pure Silver by Philip Kingsley that will give your hair shine and remove any brassy tones.

Now that you have your new look, remember to update your make-up and clothing too. Look for rich, bright shades of lipstick. Peachy shades often work well on cheeks. Go and splash out on some new wardrobe items that reflect the new you!
