Date Disasters Avoided!

It’s Valentine’s Day and you’ve been asked on your dream date. Your nails are painted, you’ve been suitably de-fuzzed and you fit into the perfect dress. Everything’s as it should be, except for one thing; you’re on your period!

Here’s our guide to surviving your dream date during ‘that time of the month.’

As every woman will tell you, being on your period makes many of us feel as though our body resembles that of the elephant man. Our ankles swell, our boobs go up 3 cup sizes (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing) and let’s not even get started on the bloated bellies! All this and more can make you feel like locking yourself indoors and eating the night away. Well not anymore…

Tip 1: Dress Accordingly

When you’re feeling bloated and not your best the last thing you want to do is don a body con dress. That’s totally alright! Plan ahead and ask your date what he’s got planned for your night/day out and dress accordingly. A loose fitting empire line dress will hide bloated tummies while a comfy pair of stretch jeans with an embellished top looks effortlessly cool. When in doubt, wear black!
Our pain thresholds are lower when menstruating so leave those sparkly heels in the cupboard and instead opt for some chic flats.

Tip 2: Zap that Zit

Skin breakouts are an unfortunate side effect to having your period. If a pimple decides to rear its ugly head on the morning of your date do this: overdose it with zit zapping products like the Clinique Anti-Blemish Solutions Clinical Clearing Gel (R230 for 15ml on www.clinique.co.za), which instantly minimises spots upon application.

Tip 3: Pack Cleverly

No one wants to lug around a giant handbag on a date, so opt for an evening clutch instead. Don’t worry about concealing your tampons as the new Tampax Compak tampons are not only small enough to fit into any space but their pretty wrapper allows you to fool him into thinking they’re your after dinner/before the big kiss mints (be sure to pack those too, of course).

Tip 4: Watch What You Drink

Studies have shown that your tolerance to alcohol lowers whilst on their period, so monitor how much you drink throughout your date. Not only is it unsafe to drink too much, it’s also not very classy and may ruin your chances of a second date! Be sure to sip water throughout the evening to stay hydrated, diminish bloat and keep a clear head. Which leads us to our next point…

Tip 5: Be Safe

Contrary to what anyone tells you, you can still fall pregnant while on your period. If you are planning on ‘getting jiggy with it,’ then ensure you practise safe sex and use a condom. This will also prevent you contracting any nasty sexually transmitted diseases too. Trust us, it’ll be worth it in the long run…
