Bun Encyclopaedia

Last week I went over some of the basic braid techniques and this week, we’re talking bun hairstyles. Stylish, fun or sophisticated, bun hairstyles made a big splash at the New York Fashion Week Fall 2013. Naeem Khan, Jason Wu, Prabal Gurun and Sally Lapointe are just some of the designers who opted for bun hairstyles. Buns are also great styles when you’re having a bad hair day. Unfortunately most bun styles will only work on medium to long hair. Here are a few of the basic bun styles:

Basic Bun a.k.a. The Ballet Bun
This is one of the easiest buns and it will work on nearly any hair length. To create this bun, smooth your hair into a ponytail. Tightly twist your tail and wrap it around the base of your ponytail. Use a hair fork, bobby pins or hair tie to keep your bun down.

Braided Top Knot
If your hair is not long enough to do this style, use some clip in extensions. Put your hair into a hair ponytail and make a basic braid. Wrap the braid around its base to create a braided top knot. This hairstyle looks best if your hair is sleek, so use a strong hold hairspray and fine to comb to flatten any flyaways.

Messy Bun
This is by far the easiest bun to create. If you have fine hair use a light weight mousse to add volume. This bun works best on wavy or curly hair, so if you have pin straight hair use mousse and a curling wand to create some loose waves. If you want you can tie your hair into a ponytail, but it looks just as great without one. All you need to do is grab random pieces of your hair, twist it around your finger a bit and pin it down. Repeat until you’ve used all your hair. Gently tug and pull your bun and let a few pieces fall out. Use a medium hold hairspray to keep your bun in place.

Rose Bun
The rose bun is a beautiful bun that can be done in five minutes. This bun looks great on thick hair. To create the rose bun put your hair up into a ponytail. If you have fine hair, create one rope braid. If you have thick hair, create one thick rope braid and one thin rope braid. Remember to use wax on your hair to ensure that your rope braids are smooth. If you only have one braid, wrap it around the base of your ponytail, pinning it down as needed. If you have two braids, wrap the thick braid around the base of the ponytail, pinning it down with bobby pins. Wrap the smaller rope braid around the bun you just created for a larger rose bun.

Sock Bun a.k.a. Donut Hair Bun

The sock bun craze has hit South Africa. This is currently the most popular bun trend. It works on shoulder length hair and longer. You can purchase a donut hair bun ring from your local beauty store or create one by snipping off the toes of an old, but clean sock and rolling it into a donut. Whichever route you decide on, your donut needs to be similar to your hair colour. Tie your hair into a high ponytail. Pull your hair through the middle of your donut and cover the bun with your hair. Fasten the bun with bobby pins or a hair tie, ensuring that the ends of your hair are tucked under the bun.
