October is National Handwashing Month!

Did you know that October is National Handwashing Month?

From a very early age, I am sure we were all taught the importance of washing our hands, especially after an hour or two spent playing in the sand and dirt. 

In more peripheral parts of the world, however, the importance of handwashing is yet to be taught. Every year, 1,7 million children under the age of 5 die as a result of infections like diarrhoea and pneumonia. Young and unexperienced mothers bear the brunt of loss and suffering for their children when their deaths could have been prevented. 

Therefore in 2012, Lifebuoy launched their 'Help a Child Reach 5’ initiative which aims to educate new mothers and health care workers in underprivileged communities around the world that hand washing with soap is one of the most effective and low cost ways to prevent these infections. To date, the programme has reached over 250 million people globally and 8 million locally and in 2020, Lifebuoy would like to reach their goal of 1 billion people.
