The starting point of makeup is foundation and it is essential to make sure that you have the correct shade to match your face.  Many women find it difficult to find their perfect match and they end up spending a whole lot of money on a foundation that isn't their colour.  BTW this has happened to me before, the foundation looked good in the store and when I tried it at home I looked like an oompa loompa that had a bad tanning experience.  So this post is to help the women who need to know what look for when buying their foundation.

So let me begin.....

Before purchasing your foundation you first have to consider the following:

  • Your Skin tone
  • Desired Coverage
  • Skin Tone
  • Undertone
  1.  Your Skin tone -  Is your skin oily, dry, sensitive or combination?

Based on your skin type and your desired finish you can select the foundation best suited for your needs. Whether it be liquid, powder or mineral foundation it is completely up to you and what you feel comfortable on your skin.

2. Desired Coverage - What coverage would you like?

This means how much of your natural skin would you like to show through your foundation ( Full, medium, minimal and sheer)

3.  Skin tone - What is your basic skin tone?

Are you fair, moderately fair, medium, medium deep, deep or very deep?

4. Undertone - This is where many people start to get confused.  When we talk about undertones, we mean the colour that is predominant in your skin after brown or white.  Let me make this better to understand....

  • Cool tone - Pinkish with  blue veins
  • Warm tone - Yellowy with green veins
  • Natural tone- No obvious yellow or pink tones and veins are not visible

Once you have determined the best type of foundation formula for your skin, its time to go to the makeup store and get matched.  Pick 3 colours that appear close to your skin tone, or get help from a make up consultant.  Test these 3 shades on your jaw line before you make your choice.

Use a generous amount of foundation to see its true colour.  When showing up to test foundation its better to do it on a fresh, makeup free face.  It is also best to view the make up in natural light, take a walk outside and look at your makeup to see which looks best in natural light.

Most Importantly don't let any one force you into buying a specific shade,  trust yourself and decide which foundation you prefer.

I hope that this post is helpful to you ladies.

May your foundation match your neck, Concealer be creaseless, and Winged eyeliner be sharp enough to kill. AMEN
