It has an innovative design which surprised me. My first thoughts was that it was gimmicky- just another marketing ploy with the same old product. I am pretty loyal to my Maybelline mascaras. After using it, I was pleasantly surprised. the brush coated every lash effectively and evenly and you could easily build up to a rich, thick coat after a few applications. The best way to apply it is with a vibrating action. It made my lashes look dark, voluminous and thick. I wear contacts and spectacles and I did not find it irritating to either. It doesn't easily smudge either if you have hayfever like I do. The only drawback with this product is that i found that it takes long to dry. On several occasions I sneezed a few minutes after applying the mascara and ended up looking like a panda. It definitely caught my attention as the shape of the mascara is not like any other product I have seen before. I loved the size as it is small enough to carry around and fit in any makeup bag or pocket. I loved the colour as it was bright pink, which made me think it was youthful, fun and exciting. Pro’s: The interesting shape of the brush allowed me to shape my lashes and thicken/lengthen them a lot easier than most brushes, I had more control over the brush. The mascara lasts the entire day and does not fall off the lashes and create little black spots on your eyes. I also liked the way I could almost use it as a lash curler because of the shape and strength of the brush. I loved the hinge handle so that you may adjust the angle of the brush according to your liking! Cons: I cannot find any cons about this product except the fact that the brush did scare me a little when I first saw it. As soon as I used it I was completely in love with the product! Recommendation: I highly recommend this product. The bendable brush allows for a more comfortable application and there is no longer the worry of stabbing yourself in the eye again. At first glance it looks like a bulky product, but that is only because of the genius of the design. The applicator wand had a good, broad base which allowed for a firm grip. What particularly impressed me, is that the mascara allowed for applying from bottom to top with the flexible wand, which gave me a good view of the lashes and thus the best way to apply the product. The positioning of the hand when applying mascara makes all the difference. I also appreciated the fact that there wasn't too much of the mascara on the brush applicator, which meant that the lashes didn't clump. The effect created was truly mega, and I also like the fact that the lashes weren't spidery or too stiff, but that they held. But even after a month of using it I don't seem to have gotten any better at it! It just makes you want to reach for it. Obviously the brush is the key feature as it is very different from your normal mascara brush. I really like the change. With a normal brush I usually battle to get to the very base of my lashes to start building up volume from the root.The Mega Effects mascara, however, is designed in such a way that you get right in between the lashes which I really like. I also love that it manages to separate the lashes coating each one individually. My only dislike would be that it is hard to control the brush in such a way that I don't get any mascara on the lid. I am not sure if I am just not used to it yet or if the brush is a little too big but I usually get a small smudge near the lashes. The colour is a nice saturated black and looks great. The packaging is quite practical and easy to carry. There seems to be a lot of product in the tube. Do I recommend to try it out? Definitely yes! The price is great (R99.95 in the current Avon brochure) and the chances are that you will fall in love with the brush. It's not the usual Mascara and looks very different... I was very excited to try it out though! So I tried it out and I was quite impressed at the way it applied so smoothly! Clump free (YAY!) Although the only problem I had was that it sort of messed my eyelids a bit but I'm a very messy person when it comes to applying Mascara so I think that was my fault. It came off from my eyelids easily with a wet earbud though so that was cool, although I had to reapply my eyeshadow. I applied it in the morning and got home late that night and it looked as if I'd just applied it! I found that really awesome... I couldn’t quite figure out what goes where but once I figured it out i was completely overtaken by the genius of the design. We often hear one size fits all but that's really just not the case and I think Avon has tried to make this statement true with this mascara. This wand is actually adjustable and sits comfortably in the nook of your hand making it easy to apply but unfortunately not that easy to control. Due to the flexibility of the wand itself and its small size to accompany it, it’s a mission to actually apply it without having smudge lines all over your eyes. I must say, the bristles are spaced great to avoid clumping (well done avon) BUT the mascara takes forever to dry which results in once having a grunge look unintentionally. One thing that it is great for is super straight lashes. I gave the wand to my mom to try out and it is the only mascara she’s used that managed to curl those straight as a board eye lashes. I thought about it all day and couldn't wake up early enough to give it a bash! It ceratinly delivered with being super fun to use - however I love major volume and this doesn't deliver in that sense. If you naturally have thick bold lashes I would definitely reccomend this as what you would be looking for is length and this truely gives great legnth! I found that because I was looking for volume - it was quite messy as I was trying to layer it and with the new style of applicator you can really get right up into the base of your lashes like never before. I did not find the actual mascara formulation itself to be the most fantastic I have ever tried, I do however think that their (Avon's) new take on the applicator brush is rather ingenious and firmly believe it is set to become the next "wunderkind" of our century.. That said I did not find that the formulation did much to dramatically increase the volume as promised, instead it coated them well and evenly (all due to the fabulous brush)and did perhaps give them a lengthened look. The "wetness" of the formulation was a very nice surprise as I don't generally like a mascara that is too dry and find that the average "sensitive eye" mascara tends to be rather on the dry side. I will not deny in the beginning it was a rather difficult concept to grasp ( the new way of applying mascara) but after watching an application video on BB it all seemed like a breeze and after a few attempts I reckon I may have it down to a fine art.. It also just so happened that I just needed a mascara. :)My mascara arrived late (due to the postal service- egh) but also just in time because I ran out of my other mascara. Opening the new box was quite confusing because it's not like conventional mascaras that are in long, cylindrical tubes. When I saw the black and pink packaging, I was certainly more intrigued by it. I must admit that opening it was quite an experience for me as I was afraid I'd break it. It unfortunately was quite a struggle to pull the applicator our of the tube and some of the mascara splashed on my shirt and the mirror :( When I applied it to the top of my eyelashes, it coated each eyelash evenly and when I brushed them from the bottom, it gave another thicker, even coat. My eyelashes now look thicker, longer and more full. It definitely made a difference to the lashes on my lower lid as it shows them much longer and thicker. I was partially aware that those existed. LOL until now :) On the whole, this mascara is of very good quality and I’m pleased with the result of eyelash coating and coverage I get. However, I’m not completely sold on the new applicator. “If it aint broke, don’t fix it.”? I was super excited as I didn’t receive any messages from BB indicating that id been chosen to review a new product, I later learnt that with BB’s make-over my messages are no longer received through my email. So I no longer had to purchase the mascara but I did have to get reviewing, the mascara is on special at the moment for R99.99. I tore open the envelope to find the black Avon box with its signature white text. How very “keeping up with the Joan’s” (Kardashians are more what I keep up with though) of Avon to incorporate the covetable monochrome look into their packaging. The emphasis on “MEGA” is dually noted and I knew I was in for a mind-blowing treat! I was stoked to see I’d received the mascara in blackest black as I’m not the biggest fan of brown mascara. The mascara itself is very new in terms of size, shape, brush, formula and design. It’s the first revolution made to mascara in ages and has definitely caused a frenzy amongst the cosmetic conscience. The mascara is packaged in a black and red squishy almost tippex looking contraption that’s easy on the eye and very different compared to conventional mascaras. The black base is made of a softer plastic and can be squeezed whilst the red lid is hard and keeps the stalk of the applicator safe and protected. Between the base and lid is a shiny black plastic band that has AVON written in white. The red lid has MEGA effects done in black which is very striking. As this is the biggest stir to mascaras and it creates big results I love how AVON has played this up with the emphasis on the word MEGA. The red lid fits on snuggly with a click and does need some persistence to pull open; I suggest pulling to the side rather than up to de-clip. Once open, the mascara gets even weirder looking and a bendable handle is staring at me. I’m a bit perplexed and so decide to read through the handy instruction leaflet that came with the product within the box. So, you need to rock the brush from side-to-side and then pull out. This was easier to read than accomplish and I learnt the valuable need of Avon’s to include those little raised dots over half the handle and the base of the bristles. These little dots help your finger grip onto the handle to pull it out the base. Once this was established and achieved I was now staring at a very peculiar “brush”. This is more a bunch of bristles strategically placed to achieve a result more than the conventional mascara wand and brush. I love the fact that the “brush” is made of rubber as that’s my favourite type of bristles. They hold the most formula without wastage and can slide easily through every single eye lash. The bristles are of different shapes and the length of the brush is much longer than normal mascaras. I appreciate the design of incorporating smaller bristles along the edges as they catch the edge eye lashes perfectly without getting them stuck together. The handle of the mascara can be bent to suit your preferred angle which makes the application strange on the first time. I’ve used this mascara about 5 times now and am still struggling with the handling of the brush. The brush is ergonomically designed for both comfort and control. Even though I struggle with the brush, I still find getting my lashes coated from root to tip very successful. Due to the unique design, mascara can now be applied in 12 different angles, SERIOUSLY! The formula is as black as I’ve ever seen! This is very very very striking both on the bristles and on your lashes. You might think you normal mascara is very black but puh-lease darlings, that would look brown when compared to the MEGA effects hue! It’s a clump-free, seat proof, non-flaking, non-smudging and ophthalmology tested formula that delivers the finest quality. The mascara is available in two shades at R189.95 each; Blackest Black and Brown Black. The formula is weaker in consistency than the average mascara and so can smudge onto fingers and eye-lids much easier. On my first application I had panda eyes with smudges everywhere, but the formula comes off easily with some make-up remover. I suggest a lot of practise or doing your mascara before the rest of your make-up if you haven’t mastered this brush yet. My eyelashes looked coated in shiny black tar and they stayed that way throughout the day. I do love the consistency in this product and the brilliant true black of its colour. Due to its weaker/thinner formula, eyelashes look slick and coated with lustre. The formula is not harsh and goes on smoothly from root to tip without any clumping or blocking. I’m normally a person who likes coating my mascara brush in a second round of mascara to achieve the most maximum results but this was difficult to do with this product as it is a hassle to put the wand back into the base and then wiggling it around and squeezing the base then pulling back out to apply; so needless to say I only used the one coat. Even with only one coat, my lashes were instantly longer and refined. I did feel that they gave me a very noticeable false lash look as it sort of gathers the strands of lashes into sections. This I found not to be appealing as I tend to gravitate to a full, wide, separated and natural fan look when using mascara. This mascara gives an iconic “Twiggy” look and I’m more of a Khloe Kardashian kinda girl. This is a fantastic addition to the evolution of mascara and the many different looks one can achieve. It wouldn’t be my first choice for a day look but I will pull this out when the night calls and I need to paint the town red! It’s also a great go-to when you need a false-lash effect and want to stand out from the crowd with lashes that take-off! I kept poking the brush into my eye, as I just couldn't judge where to start using it from and then kept smudging the mascara all over, it splattered as I blinked. On the plus side, it does last long and look great. It comes off quite easily in the shower. I am always very excited when receiving mascaras to test out, especially ones such at the Avon Mega Effects Mascara that is so unique. The wand of the mascara is unlike any other want on the market. It seems rather intimidating at first and I wasn’t too certain about how to use it, but is works like a charm. Holding it against the lash line and simply blinking coats each lash evenly with the product. The bristles of the brush separate lashes beautifully and the shape of the want helps to curl lashes up. The mascara wears well throughout the day and feels light on your lashes. My lashes didn’t feel all that hard with the mascara on, which is something I personally look for in a mascara. I do not like it when mascara makes my lashes feel like twigs. The cons: It is a little difficult to dip the wand back into the tube to get more product onto the wand. I am impressed with the amount it dispenses onto the wand but it is not enough to cover both eyes properly. All in all, I am rather impressed with the Avon mascara. It carries very well in a makeup bag and makes applying mascara very easy. Open up the box and the first thing you'll notice is that it comes with instructions. Yep - for mascara...who would've thought?! Don't do what I did and ignore them - save yourself the hassle and read their "how-to" leaflet :) It's pretty simple actually - remove the pink lid and hold the pink handle, gently wiggling the wand from side to side to get it out the tube. Got it. Step 1 down, now to apply it... I honestly thought the application would be much easier than what it was. My first encounter with this cool, modern-looking mascara wand was tricky and a bit frustrating, though I'm sure with practice it gets easier. What did I love about it? * First things first, the hot-pink & black packaging is stunning - great colour choice and the design is amazingly sleek and compact * You can bend the handle of the wand to get the most comfortable angle for application * The brush fits well and comfortably along the lashes and their natural shape * I'm always looking for the blackest black mascara I can find, because often your regular black mascaras end up looking a bit grey in the light - the AVON Mega Effects lives up to its promise! * It did not flake, crumble or smudge once during the day! :) * It didn't irritate my usually sensitive eyes * It doesn't clump What I didn't enjoy about it: * It was difficult to apply and definitely requires some time and a bit of practice to master * Even though you can bend the handle to fit comfortably, it all felt quite awkward and unnatural - I guess that's just because the design is just so new and different to the regular wand I'm used to holding * The application was quite messy, despite trying to be careful I had to clean up a bit around the lashline on my top eyelid * Although it lengthened my lashes nicely, it didn't provide the volume it promised or that I really want from a mascara (even after applying 2-3 coats). The mascara is very nicely packaged and the handle bends nicely at whichever angle you wish i did however have an issue with the curve on the brush my eye is very curved and the brush seemed to not have enough of a curve so i couldnt use it per instruction i found it easier to hold the brush upside down or just use the sides. The issue i have with all avon mascaras is the formula it has the right thickness and is not over runny to coat the lashes nicely but the problem is during the day it begins to flake and i end up with a major black eye. My image is after 3 coats and you will notice it just simply coats the lashes no lengthening( which i look for in a mascara) and not much volume.The only thing that i found positive was the fact that it did not clump. It was quite messy at first and I had to clean my face and resort to my existing mascara as I was running out of time. I tried it in the evening and fared a lot better and the next morning it was much easier and for the third time this morning I was a "professional" Practice makes perfect. I love it. I don't have the longest of lashes, but this mascara made them look naturally long and I did not have any clumps like some of the reviews I have read. One of my work mates even commented on it this morning. Initially before I receieved it and saw online pictures I was a lil freaked at the idea of putting such a large looking brush at a wierd angle to my eye, but my fears were silly. By the second stroke I was doing fine, much more control than the normal brushes. I have long eyelashes and this really helped then stand out and gave them an added curl without the curling tongs. Nice black dark colour and it has great lasting/staying power. I havent been in the rain or cried with them, so I dont know how it will fair with that- but great under 35 degree heat yesterday. The package is smaller than I expected but easy and great to pack away or through in a bag. Also like the brush, novel idea. Great that the top of the 'tube' where you put the brush into the mascara stops air and takes off excess mascara. Love how the brushes seperate the lashes as well but the movable handle is great and not so great at the same time - I can adjust position put when you push a lil too hard when applying it did change position and I almost took had it all smudged into my eye. I've never been more confused on how to use a mascara quite like this one. When I took it out the box I think my first words were "wow". I immediately grabbed the instructional pamphlet for directions as I knew it wouldn't be easy and I was right. Firstly it takes alot of practising to perfect. Avon have literally reinvented the wheel with this so you need to forget what you know about mascara and start from scratch. Holding the brush felt weird because its flat. Then there's the application which is tricky. It almost feels like you have a paint brush in your hand and you painting your lashes. When I finished my lashes the effect wasn't great. I had smudges all over but you know, practice makes perfect. After a week of trial and error, I think I've mastered the application. I have to say, I do prefer mascaras that have these bristle brushes like this Avon one as it works well for my lashes. I love the deep shade of Black that outlined my eyes very nicely, it did not clump even though I put on a second application(for more effect). It stayed the entire day and mind you considering the rain lately, it did well! It also grabs even the smallest eyelashes, even though it doesn't feel that way. The price is reasonable and fairly easy to obtain because you order via an Avon representative. So you getting it delivered to you!! I think its good value! After all the years of a straight wand, being faced with what is essentially a mini-paintbrush is quite scary. Fears aside, I attempted to apply this mascara, and was quite surprised at just how easy the brush design made application! This is going to be a love/hate type of mascara for most people. To be honest, I would have loved to give this mascara 5/5 based on design alone, however the brush design is the only really good thing about this mascara at all. While the Avon team obviously spent loads of time designing the applicator and packaging, it seems like they totally forgot about the mascara itself. And this is possibly the worst mascara I have ever used. Having used the same mascara I regularly use for 5+ years, I thought maybe I was judging this mascara too harshly after the first application, and used it for about a week to test it out completely. Still not impressed - at all! The main problems I had with this mascara were: -It takes FOREVER to dry, and I say FOREVER in caps because after applying the mascara, getting dressed, and tying my hair up it was still wet and proceeded to transfer all over my lids -I have long, straight lashes, and need a mascara which provides some sort of shape or stiffness to the lashes, which this did not do at all - As the day progressed, I could actually see how the very little 'lift' provided by the mascara began sagging - The mascara made my lashes look very sparse and thin, which is really strange considering they are relatively thick to begin with While I think the concept behind the application of the mascara is absolutely brilliant (hint, hint Maybelline), this does not outweigh the fact that the mascara itself is terrible. And while I realise that everyone looks for different things in a mascara, I think a R40 no-name mascara is much better quality then this. The packaging and wand took me completely by surprise.It took me a while to figure out how to even remove the wand and it is not as simple as a twist and wiggle. At first sight I thought, how on earth am I supposed to use this?! I do love the little wipers that the wand comes out of which remove excess for you quite effectively. The wand has an adjustable handle for ease of use, which bends anyway you wish however I found that bending the handle or not didn't make any difference to application for me.The mascara is tricky at first mostly because we are accustomed to a regular long wand. The first few tries I did get product onto my lids but soon realised you have to apply slowly and not rush through. It is probably the tiny bristles on the side that get onto your lid if you are hasty. As you can see in the pictures, my eyelashes are long but they are straight and need curl. The mascara did a good job of curling for me. It also thickened, dried fast and stayed put. The mascara is not water proof but is definitely smudge proof, I wore it on a 45min walk on a sunny day and even though the rest of my face was shiny the mascara stayed perfectly.This mascara has grown on me! I do enjoy using it now and love that the wand sort of combs my lashes. I rushed to try and open it but had no idea how to... just then I knew this was going to be a game changer! After reading the instructions and rocking the brush out of the tube i was skeptical about the brush and had flashes of mascara getting everywhere. Because of the wide brush, I also thought it will be difficult to handle... this was however not the case! The brush handled like a dream. The handle is nice & short allowing for precision and also adjustable so it makes it easy to maneuver around the tricky small lashes. The mascara did not go everywhere as I initially feared. Nothing smeared through onto my lids. I was astounded. It worked. It changed how I thought about mascara and truthfully... I thought to myself... why has no one ever thought of this before. The fact that you apply the mascara from the front of your face and not with your hand next to it allows you to apply the mascara the same way on both eyes without having to do funny twisting of wrists and flipping of wands. Love it. There is however one little drawback.... the formula is not as thickening and as lengthening as I would have liked. I however added 2-3 layers and it worked amazingly. It did not smudge and I partied till the next morning without the dreaded raccoon eye. A word of caution though... it burns like a MOFO if you get it in your eye. This was a lapse of concentration on my part. Your eye will tear up very badly.... which is also why I know it does not smudge easily. ;-) All & all, I will surely buy this again! I am a mascara whore and try them all. I really loved the sexy and giving me a dramatic look it gave me for my night out. Now just imagined I had to apply a second coat… Also, it didn’t smudge at all. Although I was a bit messy because I was nervous using the brush at first. My mascara also lasted the entire night (It really did, I actually applied my make-up just before 8 the evening and I got home at 9am the next morning and still had my mascara intact). But it's not, I promise. It's actually pretty darn cool! When I opened my mascara, the first thing I thought was along the lines of "it's actually quite cute and dainty!". To me, the marketing photos made it look really intimidating, but it's not really. For perspective, I photographed the little paddle alongside a lipstick tube to show its size. Now, I know - that applicator brush looks unlike anything you've ever seen before! Where/how do you even use it? I've also photographed the Avon Mega Effects brush next to an ordinary, run-of-the-mill mascara brush. See how it's basically the same - the applicator brush is just on the end of a paddle instead of a wand. The Avon brush has spikey plastic bristles. The mascara comes with a convenient package insert that shows you exactly what to do, so don't worry - you don't need to figure it out on your own! The applicator also has the nifty trick of being able to bend, so you can change the angle to whatever is the most comfortable for you. What does this mean for your mascara application? Well, firstly, you're approaching your lashes from a different angle. Secondly, the bendable applicator means that you can get right underneath the lashes to coat even the base of the hairs. Basically, by "stamping" mascara at the roots of the lashes, you add the appearance of volume without having to get your lashes all clumpy. I love this, because (a) I have rather sparse lashes and (b) I absolutely hate when the few lashes I do have clump together, making it look like I have 4 lashes like a cartoon character. As for how the mascara looks on: this will obviously depend from woman to woman. Like I said, I have rather sparse lashes that are in need of volume. They are rather long, but since the tips of my lashes are blonde, I need a mascara to make them visible. So basically, what I want from a mascara is to make my lashes defined without clumping or migrating all over my face. (The worst, amiright?) For me, this mascara ticks all the boxes. It stays put on your lashes all day without making them too stiff or crunchy. It provides decent definition and volume without clumping. The unique applicator is easy to use and the change in the way you approach the lashes to apply mascara means that you can get right down to the base of your eyelashes. It gets to the corners of the lashes and coats the lash from root to tip. The colour - blackest black - is just that! This is my first review, so I was a little nervous but excited at the same time! When I received the box and pulled out the pink mascara, I knew I was going to have fun with it! However, it took me a while to work out how to open it, and I spent almost an hour trying to pull it out. I then decided to read the instructions and found it to be quite simple: You just need to grip and rock it side-to-side for it to come out. I felt like a kid on christmas morning when I finally pulled it out! So, the actual mascara itself was amazing! I loved how you could adjust and bend the handle... It made it so much more easier to apply. The brushes are also pointing in many different directions which gives your eyelashes that "black, blackest" look. At first I didn't think too much of it and walked out to watch tv with my boyfriend. He had a good look at me and said that my eyes looked like they were glistening.... I did find it difficult to use compared to other mascaras that I'm used to, although after practice it worked very well and helped curve my lashes, make them more defined and gave them length. I have been using the mascara for the past week, and I found the product to have pros and cons. It comes in very attractive packaging, pink and black in colour and contains 9mls of liquid mascara. I was extremely excited to start using the product as I found it to be "cute". the wand looks like a toy paintbrush or a homemade lolly pop ice-cream. It has a 3-4cm moveable handle , which was created for comfort and steadiness while apply your coat of mascara. Although I think it was a brilliant and innovated creation, I personally found it quite difficult to apply. After about 3 uses I got the hang of it, and started liking the product. It is a different design and could take a few applications to finally find your comfort with the wand. As for the liquid content, its the blackest black, its not waterproof which I prefer, and it doesn't clump, nor flake off. Overall I would rate it a 4 stars for price, quality, effectiveness, and for innovation. I would recommend the product, it is definitely worth trying.
