How to…Deal with your Period at School.

Between exams, friends and budding romances, your period is the last thing you want to think about during school or university. Read on to find out how to focus more on your friends and studies than your period.

Adopt Healthy Habits:
It’s easy to fall into an unhealthy mindset during your period, which can make it impossible to focus on your studies. Turn your attitude around and understand that you only have to feel like this for a week or so per month. Be kind to yourself, rest well and treat yourself to a shopping spree, romantic movie or girls night in with your bestie.

Gone Swimming:
Swimming lessons are a total nightmare during your period! Not anymore thanks to the new Tampax Compak! It’s discreet packaging means you can easily pack it into your P.E tote and thanks to the smooth plastic applicator you can quickly and easily insert it. Before leaving the change room double check your tampon string is neatly tucked away in your swimming costume, to avoid any awkward moments.

Be Prepared:
There’s nothing worse than being caught unawares so ensure you pack some tampons and painkillers into a little purse to carry in your school bag. Also keep track of when your period is due so that you’re not caught unawares. Tampax Compak tampons are packaged in sweet-like wrappers that fit into the palm of your hand, so no one needs to know what you’re up to. Also stash a clean pair of underwear and a change of pants if need be in your car or locker.

Enlist a Butt-Check Buddy:
If you are worried about leaking (which won’t happen with Tampax Compak, we promise!), then ask someone to double check the back of your outfit throughout the day. Pick a code name for your period to share with your girlfriends for that time of the month or for period emergencies!

Get Your Beauty Sleep:
When you’re young and in the prime of your life, who has time to sleep? If you’re on your period then it’s vital you do. Plan study time cleverly so that you get at least eight hours of sleep a night, this will alleviate feelings of irritation and depression.

Zap those Zits:
Having a pimple or two is all part of being a young adult, but no one wants to have to deal with these during your period. Adopting a proper cleansing routine is vital to keep your skin in check at all times. Use a CC cream to conceal and treat the skin without looking like you’re wearing lots of make-up!

Eat Cleverly:
Be sure to pack a healthy and nutritious lunch to take with you to school or university. Avoid heading to the canteen to gorge on sugary and salty snacks as these will only make you feel worse by spiking your blood sugar and making you more cranky. Keep bloating at bay by drinking tons of water and herbal teas, not coffee!

Caught Unawares:
We’ve all experienced it. That moment when you’re sitting in class and you get an unexpected guest, your period. Firstly don’t be embarrassed. Asked to be excused from class and head to your closest bathroom and insert a tampon. If you don’t have a tampon then use toilet paper to create a make-shift pad for until you get home. You can also head to the school nurse or guidance counsellor, who should carry feminine products with them.

Toilet Etiquette:
Be considerate when using the toilet. Dispose of your tampon in the toilet and throw the wrapper in the designated sanitary disposal bin. If you throw your tampon in the bin then wrap it in toilet paper before doing so. Always ensure the toilet is properly flushed before leaving the bathroom so that the next person doesn’t get a nasty surprise. Wash your hands before inserting your tampon to prevent transferring any germs where you don’t want them. Obviously washing your hands after changing your tampon is a big “do”.

Deal with Cramps:
Unfortunately lying in the foetal position during class just isn’t an option when you’ve got cramps. Pop some painkillers before heading out and wear a heating pad under your uniform or clothes, to discreetly deal with cramps. Breathe deeply, stay hydrated and visit the loo regularly as having a full bladder can aggravate pains.
