Woolworths is a home decor, clothing, food and cosmetics brand that first opened in Cape Town in 1931.

Founder Max Sonnenberg, opened his second store in Durban only three years later. Within 4 years since opening, there were a number of Woolworths stores around South Africa. In just 80 years there are over 400 stores across South Africa, Africa and the Middle East.

Woolworths was the first retailer to offer employees a pension fund, medical aid and maternity leave in hopes of gaining the best professional employees.

By the early 1970’s Woolworths had already adopted the latest technology and fast became the most forward thinking industry of its time.

Woolworths was one of the first South African retailers to introduce the “sell by date” on food as well as offer pre-washed lettuce and machine washable wool clothing.

In 2008 and 2010 Woolworths won Responsible Retailer of the year.
