What Products to Use and Avoid On Curly Hair

Find out which hair products to use and to avoid on curly hair.
Curly hair doesn’t have to be difficult to manage.

As every curly-haired woman knows, you can’t jump in and out the shower for your curls to look their best. The curl needs to be trained with the correct products and styling techniques. If you have curly hair, you’ll notice that after a blow out, your hair won’t immediately go back to its natural curl and it might take a few washes for it to curl correctly. By using the correct products, you can shorten this period, or avoid it completely.

What to use on curly hair:
Moisturizing conditioner – I’ve mentioned the importance of using a good conditioner multiple times and I will continue to do so. When you have curly hair, conditioner is your friend. Normally curly hair is normally very dry because natural oils on the scalp do not spread through curls as quickly as it does through straight hair. This is why your hair will get oily faster when it is flat ironed than when it is curled. So, you need to a have a good moisturizing conditioner to nourish your hair and ensure that it does not become dried out.

Detangling Crème or detangling sprayGetting a knot out of curly hair can be a mission and a half. The longest I’ve spent detangling my hair was 30 minutes. Normally I use conditioner to detangle my hair, but a detangling rinse or spray can help getting your curls knot free in a shorter amount of time.

Curl mousse – Always choose a mousse that is specifically designed for curly hair as the normal kind could make your hair hard or sticky. It will help shape and define your curls as well as make them bouncy. Read this VO5 Curl Defining Mousse Review.

Curl spray – Like curling mousse, curl spray will help create bouncy and defined curls.

Curl serum – This will tame frizz, leaving your hair silky soft and shiny, but without weighing down your curls.

Wide tooth comb – Technically this is a tool and not a product, but if you have curly hair, you need a wide tooth comb to detangle and style your locks. Using a brush or fine tooth comb on your curls will cause it to frizz and poof up. Trust me, no matter how hard you try, the poodle look will never be in.

What not to use on curly hair:
Volume shampoo – Avoid this like the plague unless you have extremely thin hair. For sometime during my teens, Body on Tap was popular. Being impressionable teens, my best friend and I tried their products out (at different times). The good news is that the products do create insane volume; the bad news is if you have curly hair, it will end up looking like a lion’s mane. I could not control or manage my hair at all. It is definitely not suitable for curly hair.

Silicon products – Silicon products can be used on curly hair, but only if you’re going to style it straight. In addition to product build up, silicone products will straighten your curls so unless you’re going to flat iron your locks, give them a miss.

So ladies, now that you know which hair products to use and which not to use, there’s no reason why you should have a bad curly hair day!
