DIY Chocolate Face Masks

Need a new face mask? Why not try a DIY chocolate face mask so good you can almost eat it!

Chocolate is not only the mother of all sweet treats but it also doubles as a fantastic DIY beauty ingredient! If you have some leftover Valentine’s Day chocolate or cocoa in your kitchen cupboards then you are sure to find the perfect DIY chocolate face mask below. While all these DIY chocolate face masks seem more like desserts they will not only moisturize, cleanse and exfoliate your skin but still taste delicious while doing it!

Simple Cocoa Mask
The easiest of all the DIY chocolate face masks simply requires you to mix together cocoa powder and milk. Combine 1 tablespoon of milk with 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder in a bowl. Stir vigorously until it forms a paste. You may need to adjust the quantities of milk and cocoa powder as needed, by adding in a little more milk or cocoa powder in order to get the face mask mixture to the right consistency. Apply the face mask in a thin layer onto your face ensuring to avoid the eye area, if some of the face mask gets in your mouth, no biggie it’s a delicious all natural face mask! Leave face mask on for 10 – 15 minutes and then rinse off with lukewarm water. Apply moisturizer to face.

Moisturizing Cocoa Mask
Combine 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder, 1 tablespoon of honey and 1 tablespoon of fresh cream (plain or greek yoghurt will make a good substitute) together in a bowl.  Stir the ingredients together until it is a creamy and smooth mixture. Apply face mask in a thin layer onto your face and leave it on for 10 – 15 minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water and apply moisturizer to face.

Exfoliating Cocoa Mask
Combine 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder, 1 tablespoon of honey, 1 tablespoon of fresh cream (plain or greek yoghurt will make a good substitute) and 1 tablespoon of oats together in a bowl.  Stir ingredients together vigorously until well combined. Apply the face mask in a thin layer onto your face and massage the face mask in small circles as you apply it onto your face, this will ensure that the oats are gently exfoliating and deep cleansing your skin. Leave mask on for 10 –  15 minutes, rinse with lukewarm water and apply moisturizer to face.

Deep Moisturizing & Exfoliating Cocoa Mask
Combine 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder, 1 tablespoon of honey, 1 tablespoon of fresh cream (plain or greek yoghurt will make a good substitute), 1 tablespoon of avocado and 1.5 teaspoons cornmeal together in a bowl. The cornmeal can be omitted if you don’t have any to hand, however this will eliminate the exfoliating factor of this face mask and leave it being only a deep moisturizing face mask. Stir the ingredients together vigorously until well combined. Apply the face mask in a thin layer onto your face and massage the face mask in small circles as you apply it onto your face, this will ensure that the cornmeal will gently exfoliate your skin. Leave mask on for 10 – 15 minutes, rinse with lukewarm water and apply moisturizer to face.

Exfoliating Chocolate Mask
You can make this face mask using the microwave or a double boiler, I prefer a double boiler as the result is a much smoother, silkier face mask.
For the double-boiler method, fill a small pot with water till just below the handles of the pot, find a heat proof bowl and place on top of the pot. The bottom of the heat proof bowl must not touch the water, if it does empty a little bit of the water out of the pot so that this doesn’t happen. Place 1 – 2 blocks of chocolate (broken into smaller pieces) into the heat proof bowl together with 1 – 1.5 tablespoons of milk and turn the stove onto a low heat. As the water comes to a gentle boil turn the stove off. The chocolate should be melted and starting to combine with the milk, stir gently to fully combine the chocolate with the milk. Remove heat proof bowl from pot. To the chocolate-milk mixture, add in 1 tablespoon of brown sugar and 1 tablespoon of oats and combine thoroughly. Leave the face mask to cool slightly, when the face mask is warm to the touch apply a thin layer to your face avoiding the eye area. Massage the mask in small circles as you apply it to your face, this will ensure that the oats and brown sugar are gently exfoliating your skin.  Leave mask on for 10 – 15 minutes, rinse with lukewarm water and apply moisturizer to face.
